This document has been redrafted and modified adoption of International Standard ISO
15184:2020 Paints and varnishes - Determination of film hardness by pencil test.
The following structural adjustments have been made with respect to ISO 15184:2020:
— Annex B of this document corresponding to Annex A of ISO 15184:2020.
There are many technical deviations between this document and ISO 15184:2020, and
such deviations have been marked by perpendicular single line (|) in the outer side page
margin of the corresponding clauses; see Annex A for the list of technical deviations and
their justifications.
For the purposes of this document, the following editorial changes have been made:
— the editorial error in ISO 15184:2020, Clause 11, c), 1), is corrected.

Paints and varnishes — Determination of film
hardness by pencil test

1 Scope
This document specifies a method for determining the film hardness by pushing pencils
of known hardness over the film.
This document is applicable to the determination of the film hardness of single coating of
a paint, varnish or related product, or to the determination of the film hardness of the
upper layer of a multi-coat system.
It has not been found to be useful in comparing the pencil hardness of different coatings.
It is more useful in providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels exhibiting
significant differences in pencil hardness.
This document is applicable only to the determination of the film hardness of smooth
surfaces.
