Preface

T he year 2007 marked the 700th anniversary of the arrest of the

Knights Templar. Once they were a renowned band of crusading
knights, but in 1307 they were accused of corruption, heresy, idolatry
and sodomy. Their guilt and the fate of their fabled treasure and the
secrets they were alleged to hold have intrigued authors, historians, theo-
logians and treasure-seekers over the centuries, whilst the immense suc-
cess of Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code has brought the Templars
and their secrets before the public as never before. Now thousands flock
to the sites mentioned in Brown’s book, looking for the codes, and hoping
to solve the mystery for themselves. But were the Knights Templar the
holders of secrets that could destroy the faith of the western world, or an
organisation of knights simply fighting for what they believed in? Their
success in attracting gifts of property and riches to their order also cre-
ated jealousy and led to accusations of corruption which accumulated
over time, and led at last to their downfall at the hands of a determined
king of France and a weak pope.
However, the glamour of the knight of the red cross setting out on a
quest remains with us, and we all love a mystery. The Knights Templar,
the clash of swords on armour down the ages, and a dedication to a cause
which they thought was right will stay within Western culture for many
hundreds of years to come, whilst the 700th anniversary of their descent
into imprisonment and death is an appropriate time to celebrate them.
