Competitive Battlecard
Entuity vs PRTG
General Description of PRTG
PRTG is essentially a performance graphing product that provides monitoring/reporting support for network devices, servers,
databases and some key applications. It is designed for small to lower-end mid-range networks. There is a free version for minimal
device support and additional price points to accommodate >100 sensors and servers. The free PRTG version supports just100
sensors, which is enough to monitor around 20 servers and devices. A sensor in PRTG's world is defined as one aspect that can be
monitored on a device, such as the CPU load on a machine, a port of a switch, a specific URL or the traffic of a network connection.
Each monitoring aspect requires a sensor.
Its topology mapping would probably be adequate for a small organization but would be difficult to administer in a large enterprise.
Topology mapping for PRTG is completely manual. Troubleshooting use cases are aided by its packet capture capabilities but are
otherwise very limited. It is a basic solution for network monitoring that does not take advantage of predictive analytics.
Strengths of PRTG
A key strength is cost. It is free for networks who are monitoring around 20 servers and devices. PRTG covers more server and
application monitoring performance than ENA.

Partner Information Guide vs PRTG
-- 2018
PRTG is a lower-end tool. It's overall functionality and design supports smaller network environments where its limitations
are not felt. Its free version and pricing reflects that positioning. ENA easily manages small networks and scales up for large
enterprises without a lot of engineering and staff time.
PRTG is missing key components for optimum network management. The lack of configuration monitoring and
configuration management leaves vital network management capability gaps. Other valuable areas not included in PRTG are
service-based management which is extremely helpful in today's end-user digital workplace and application path manage-
ment that accurately shows the traffic path taken out and back for monitoring critical application performance. ENA includes
configuration monitoring and configuration management along with a service management strategy and application
path management equipping IT teams to manage their network with contemporary tactics.
Virtual Platforms are not recommended for PRTG. Users are out of luck if they want to implement a virtual platform
to use PRTG. It is highly recommended that a dedicated physical machine be used to run the PRTG core server or remote
probes. Additionally, they do not offer technical support regarding performance and stability problems for PRTG installs on virtual
machines that run with more than 5,000 sensors. Again, physical machines are preferred. ENA supports virtual platforms
and are federated in design to share data from server to server without the user needing any appreciation of which
server is responsible for managing each device on the network.
Number of users that can log into a PRTG server is limited to 30 users. ENA has no limit and is able to support
all types of users from CIOs, CTOs, Branch Managers along with all IT organization personnel worldwide.
PRTG's Topology Mapping is completely manual adding more administrative overhead. Users can create maps
that include devices but the connectivity between devices has to be manually identified and drawn. There is no PRTG function
to collect Layer 2, Layer 3, routing topology or end-host connectivity. ENA automatically creates maps and their associ-
ated connectivity collecting Layer 2, Layer 3, routing topology or end-host connectivity. Automation ensures human
errors are a thing of the past and topology maps can be automatically updated.
To facilitate scaling and better management PRTG users need to purchase 3rd-party product, Savision.
Savision functions as a management layer for PRTG. This is another administrative overhead activity where PRTG users need to
maintain a separate piece of software increasing the cost of ownership and adding another layer of management. ENA is an all
in one solution that includes root cause analysis, custom dashboards, real time metrics of devices, services, groups us-
ing all of the functions built in to the product. No third party needed for network management functionality.
