From the point of view of their

evolution the Bryophytes stand at
level higher than that of Thallophytes
but lower than that of Pteridophytes
and Phanerogams. The plants
belonging to Algae are commonly
found in water and rarely on the land,
whereas the Bryophytes are land
inhabiting plants. The water is still
needed for the movement of the
gametes of Bryophtes and in their
vegetative structure they have
adapted themselves to a terrestrial
life. The Bryophytes are known as
amphibians of the plant kingdom.
