1.2 An RLC circuit consists of a 44 Ω resistor, a 100 mH inductor, and a 50 µf
capacitor, all connected in parallel across a 220 V, 50 Hz supply.
Calculate the following:
1.2.1 The current flowing in each branch (5)

1.2.2 The supply current (2)

1.2.3 The phase angle (3)

QUESTION 2: BASIC DESIGN PROCEDURES
2.1 Explain why it is best to start your design project on a breadboard. (3)
 You will get a chance to test your circuit before making it final. 
 You do not damage components by soldering and desoldering them. 
 Mistakes are easily rectified. 
2.2 Electronic circuits can easily malfunction , but in most cases the faults are
fixable.
Give THREE types of faults in an electronic circuit. (3)
 Open circuit. 
 Short circuit. 
 High and low resistance circuits. 
2.3 As a new apprentice in your company, you are given the following electronic
components to design an astable multivibrator circuit:
 2 × 470 Ω resistors
 2 × 47 kΩ resistors
 2 × 2N2222 NPN transistors
 2 × 50 µf capacitors
 2 × LEDs

2.3.1 Draw a labelled circuit diagram of the astable multivibrator you

designed. (8)

2.4 Give ONE application of each of the following multivibrators.

2.4.1 Astable multivibrator.
 Provide the voltage pulse to trigger a one-shot multivibrator.
 Used as a pulse generator to generate clock pulses in digital circuits
2.4.2 Monostable multivibrator.
 To generate time delays
 Can be used to turn lights/LEDs ON or OFF
2.4.3 Bistable multivibrator
 Electronic toggle switch
 Used in pulse generation circuits
 Used in counting circuits
 Used in memory storage units in computers
 Used in timing circuits as frequency divider

SECTION B
QUESTION 3: FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRONICS
3.1 Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE by writing only
‘True’ or ‘False’ next to the question number (3.1.1 – 3.1.5) in the ANSWER
BOOK.
3.1.1 False 
3.1.2 True 
3.1.3 True 
3.1.4 True 
(1 × 4)

3.2 (4)

3.2.1 Electronic device for increasing the amplitude of electrical signals. 

3.2.2 Electronic circuit that produces a periodic oscillating signal. 
3.2.3 It uses negative feedback. 
3.2.4 It uses positive feedback. 

3.3.1 The basic inverter draws its power from a battery or several batteries wired in
parallel.  The DC from the battery is fed to an electronic circuit consisting
of power switching transistors. By rapidly switching these transistors on and
off (“chopping” up the DC), and feeding this output to a transformer, it makes
the transformer think it is getting AC.  The transformer changes this
"alternating (changing) DC" into AC at the output. 
