White Howlers

Delve – Reap – Dare – Sacrifice

(Sources: W20 White Howlers)
Renown: Honor

In the dark of night, humanity have heard the sounds of packs of wolves, fearing them to be
the hunters of old, here to take away their children. But when Lion's children chanted their
death-songs, it was to catch prey far worthy of the White Howlers.
Under the cover of night on ancient barrows, bone-white fires signalled that the White
Howlers were seeking their adversary in augurs and prophecy, a path leading these slayers of
monsters towards greater and greater foes.
As White Howlers delve into the pits of enemies both old and new, these werewolves sworn
to Lion dared to defy the darkness, as they went to reap that which defied Gaia's order, a
tribe of warriors, willing to sacrifice everything in order to achieve victory.

Who were the White Howlers?

The White Howlers represented the guardians of the uttermost border, who delved into the
unknown to defy the unknown darkness. Where the Hart Wardens protected home and
hearth, the Howlers were wardens of the gauntlet, the sentries near the Spirit Wilds, who
understood Rage was the power needed to shape the world before them. A small tribe with
few caerns to their name, Lion found his White Howlers among those who take on
responsibility like few others. Doomed to an ungrateful task, Lion's chosen always needed to
take what they could or what was owed to them.
Fiercely independent and highly opposed to being ruled by other tribes, the Howlers ranged
far and wide in search those places where the darkness was attempting to seep in. In fact,
they crowned their own kings, ritual leaders standing apart from the rest of their society to
assume mastery of the territory itself.
Those who hated the White Howlers called them mercenary or even Forsworn, while septs
that welcomed White Howlers found use for them as keepers of the Spirit Wilds, shrewd
advisers and guardians against the darkest beings.
The few who served under a White Howler told of strange, if lucrative experiences, as the
Howlers always made sure the scores were balanced, yet never fully trusted anyone else with
important tasks.

In the last days before they disappeared, a cry went through every court in the Wilds, that
the White Howlers had declared war upon the Wyrm itself, and soon the greatest septs of
White Howlers had gone to answer the call.
In certain stories it was the first shot of the Apocalypse War, while other legends say claim
them to be the first to see clearly that the war had already started.
But all know what happened would never
Patron Spirit
Being children of Lion, they wield his courage as a shield against the restless dead and the
dark ones. With his roar, they hunt across moors and plains, and his pride assures them that
they will never suffer defeat.
As pack as well as pride, the White Howlers formed great packs of warriors, but their kings
had to stand alone, as befit their station, until a new and stronger king would depose their
king in combat.
A proud and strong being, Lion is forceful and embodies the territories that the White
Howler take as their own – distant and untamed. But, as their patron, they also expected
deference as the foremost slayers of strange monsters and tamers of the dark.

Favor: Brave all that is dark, the children of Lion bring their light into the darkness and
slay the monsters. A White Howler can add a die to Awareness, Occult, Animal Ken,
Survival and Athletics when aiming to confront a new enemy.
Ban: Never leave debts unresolved, whether to you, your pack or the natural cycle. The
White Howlers carry the duty to resolve what is before them, and the mercy of Lion is to
make the world right and whole, even if it means sacrifice even yourself. If a White
Howler fail to pay a debt within a month, fail to slay your foes or allow a slow death, they
may recover only a single Willpower at the start of the next session, instead of their
Composure or Resolve rating.
