DC DRIVES TUTORIALS PROBLEM 3 To 7

The document contains a series of problems related to the performance evaluation of DC motors connected to DC-to-DC converters and rectifiers. Each problem requires calculations for duty cycles, on/off times, armature currents, and firing angles under various conditions. The problems also involve analyzing the effects of AC voltage, ripple, and power on the motor's operation.

DC DRIVES TUTORIALS

Problem 3
A 22 kW, 240 V, 3000 r/min dc motor is connected to a dc-to-dc converter that operates at a
switching frequency of 1.0 kHz. The converter is fed by a 6-pulse rectifier connected to a 300 V,
3 phase, 50Hz line as shown in Figure Q3. The capacitor C and the inductor Ld act as filters. The
armature resistance and inductance are respectively 0.12 Ω and 6.5 mH. The rated dc armature
current is 45A.
Determine:
3.1. The required duty cycle when the motor develops its rated torque at rated speed. (5)
3.2. The on and off times of Q1 and Q4. (5)
3.3. If at a given instant Id = +80 A, and the charging current of the capacitor C is 66A, at what
percentage of the armature rated current is the DC motor operating? (5)

Problem 4
A 33 kW, 180 V, 3000 r/min dc motor is connected to a dc-to-dc switching converter. The
converter operates at 1 kHz switching frequency. The converter is fed by a 6-pulse uncontrolled
rectifier connected to a 210 V, 3 phase, 50Hz line as it is shown in Figure Q4. The capacitor C
and the inductor Ld act as filters. The armature resistance and inductance are respectively 0.11 Ω
and 10 mH. The armature current at nominal torque of the motor is 62A.
Determine:
4.1. The required duty cycle when the motor develops its rated torque at rated speed.
4.2. The ‘on’ times of Q1 and Q4. When are Q2 and Q3 supposed to operate?
4.3. What should be the duty cycle of the converter if the speed of the motor is to be dropped by
10% at rated torque?

Problem 5
A DC motor has a shunt field rated at 280V, 1.75 A. The armature is rated at 280V, 10.5A.
5.1 Calculate the effective value of 50 Hz AC voltage that should be applied to the single-phase
bridge circuit.
5.2 What is the peak-to-peak voltage ripple across the field terminals?
5.3 What is the effective value of the AC line current in the armature circuit?
5.4 Explain whether the field current contains substantial ripple
5.5 If the applied line voltage at steady-state to the input of the controlled rectifier is 170 V
and firing angle of the thyristors is 16.5 degrees, what percentage of the rated voltage will be
applied to the armature winding of the motor?
A 45 kW, 400 V, 750 rpm dc motor with an armature resistance of 0.22 Ω and a rated armature current
of 125 A is driven by an AC-DC converter as shown in Figure Q6. The converter is supplied by a three-
phase 360V, 50 Hz system.

Evaluate the performance of this dc drive by determining the following:

6.1 The firing angle to obtain rated motor voltage.

6.2 The speed of the dc motor at rated converter voltage when 𝛼𝛼 = 62°.
6.3 The firing angle in order for the dc motor to develop its rated torque at 200 r/min
6.4 The dc power supplied to the dc motor at its rated torque at 200 rpm.
6.5 The dc power developed by the dc motor at its rated torque at 200 rpm.
6.6 The reactive power absorbed by the converter at its rated torque at 200 rpm.

motor is 1200 rpm.
