4.1. PACKAGING
This device can be packaged in one or two boxes, one containing the power rack and
the second containing the control panel, or it can be delivered in a single crate
according to the type of shipping. The packaging options are as follows:
WARNING!
For packaging removal and handling of the boxes always respect the indications shown on
the packaging.
5. PRE-INSTALLATION
In order to install PIXEL HF TS, the room shall include all the necessary lines for
connecting the accessories.
This paragraph aims therefore at illustrating how to prepare the room with regard to the
power supply line and the console, as the type of the different accessories is not unique.
The PIXEL HF TS cabinet allows access to the wires located inside the inputs on the back
of the wall-mount rack.
There are two modes to connect the generator within the diagnostic system.
The first system is used to allow fast installation in diagnostic systems having a similar but
older device.
The second system, on the contrary, is based on the new special construction solutions of
last generation systems and ensures the same results while also optimising the connection
scheme.
When using the STANDARD connection system, no part of the machine will be powered
after turning off, since the power supply is disconnected from the electric panel on the wall.
When using the SIMPLIFIED system, although still respecting all safety norms for the
relevant appliances, we also obtain a sort of stand-by status as the ON/OFF module in the
generator system is still connected to the power supply.
In order to connect the console with a cabinet with the cable provided by the manufacturer,
use a Ø 60 mm with floor output (version with stand) or wall output (wall mounting) on the
console side.
Conduits only used for special wiring provided by our company cannot be used for different
purposes.
Conduits shall have open curves and have a manhole for visual inspection and can also
include external conduits of adequate size.
3. Four conductors for each external signal sent to the diagnostic input ports (signals
indicating the busy state for the diagnostic and the x-ray passage see 6.5.2).
4. Two conductors connected to the contacts of the inlet door to the diagnostic room
(serial connection); the circuit opens by opening the doors (see par.6.5.3)
In order to connect the console with a cabinet with the cable provided by the manufacturer,

6.1. DEVICE AND ACCESSORIES MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
6.2. MOUNTING
After removing all parts from their packaging, place the cabinet near it final position.
According to the location and the configuration of input cables, ensure that the cabinet is
placed in a position allowing to remove carter protections and a providing a correct
ventilation for the system (at least 25 / 30 cm free space on the side). Remove the
front/side carters, picture 2, and remove the fixing screws. Tilt the upper carter upwards as
in picture 3 to access the control electronics of the device.
According to the connection points of the different cables, free input and output paths for
the cables located on the back of the generator and close all unused terminals.
If a stand is available (optional) we suggest to place the console on the stand for a more
comfortable connection of all cables.
Fixing points are highlighted on the to of the stand, place the
console on this points and tighten the four
6 mm screws provided as indicated in the picture.
Lifting the cover of the power rack it is possible to access the control boards by unlocking
the removable holder on the front side as indicated in picture 5:
Remove the 2 screws indicated in picture 4 and slide the GHFP01* board downwards for
mounting and service operations.
Pic 4 Pic 5
Connect the 25 poles rack/console connection cable (code GHFV10*) from the CN12 male
connector of the GHFP01* board of he cabinet (picture 6) to the connector P1 on the
GHFP06* board inside the console (picture 7), then connect the cable screen to the
relevant FASTON on the rack.
Attention! The console must be grounded at the equipotential node of the cabinet with a 6
mm² Yellow-green cable.
Pic 6 Pic 7
The system is designed to be connected to the 3-phases public power supply line at 380V
50Hz (the neutral connection is necessary only when connecting 1-phase accessories).
Connect the three phases and the neutral connection to the relevant terminals R-S-T-N in
the power rack, taking care to pass the cables in the cable clamp.
Connect the equipotential ground node of the cabinet to the corresponding electric
connection using a 25mm² conductor. For further details, see par. “2.8.2 Power Supply
Mains Connection" of the 100 KHz X-RAY POWER SUPPLY SERVICE AND
INSTALLATION MANUAL" attached to the present manual.
Power supply
input point
behind the power rack
The device starts when it receives a 380Vac ±10% 50-60Hz 3-phase power supply. This
operation is performed by pressing the ON button on the console. At this point, during
installation we suggest to turn on the device only to check its operations and to turn it off
while completing the installation procedure.
According to the model of the device, the system can manage 1 or 2 x-ray tubes
(workstation 1 and workstation 2). The operations to be performed are:
1. Insert the end of the high voltage cables coming from the tube into the corresponding
slots on the upper part of the high-tension transformer located within the cabinet, having
care to respect the polarity of the tube (ANODE + and CATHODE -) and workstation
(TUBE 1 and TUBE 2).
ATTENTION! Always clean and carefully apply silicone on the high voltage
connectors. Check the x-ray tube if already installed and replace the silicon layer
if necessary.
(for further details see par. 2.8.5. "High Tension Cables" in the "100KHz X-RAY
POWER SUPPLY SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL").
2. Use shielded connection cables for the rotors (we suggest the use of a 3x 1.5 mm2
cable). Connect the yellow-green cable to the ground and connect the shield only on the
generator side. Connect the cables coming from the rotors of the tubes to the
corresponding terminal boards located near the high-tension transformer of the device,
picture 8:
Pic. 8
(for further details see par. 2.8.1. “X-Ray Tube Stator & Thermals” of the “100KHz X-RAY
POWER SUPPLY SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL”).
“X-RAY POWER SUPPLY SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL” and the manual
for the installed pipe and sheath group). For the connection of thermal protections to the
XR tube see par. 6.5.1.
3. Connect the tube liners to the "GND" connection on the high-tension transformer with
the 6mm² conductor (for further details, see par. 2.8.4. "X-Ray Tube Housing Ground"
in the "X-RAY POWER SUPPLY SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL").
This operation is rather simple and only consist in repositioning some switches on the rotor
board.

The RL18 in the PXHP10B board activates the fluoroscopy command when called; this can
be made by closing to ground (GNDPW of the PXHP10B board) the terminals 11 and 12
M5 (FLUORO) indifferently. The PXHP10B board is equipped with 6 relays that activate
upon selection of the 6 connectable accessories; one of the two contacts of the above said
relays is connected between the mass and the relevant terminal from 1 to 8 M8. When
putting the fluoroscopy command of the accessory in series to these contacts, the possible
x-ray command can be issued only if the accessory is connected. The relays RL18 has a
further free contact with output on the terminals 10 (n.closed), 11(n.open.) and 12(com.)
of M6.
The device provides an interface with a TV system with automatic brightness control. For
this reason the machine allows KV controls: it drives the diodes of two optoisolators (ISO1
and ISO2 of the PXHP10B board), providing a 24Vdc voltage to the ends of the terminals 5
M4 (+) 6 M4 (-) for KVUP and 7 M4 (+) and 8 M4 (-)
for KV DOWN; these optoisolators must be commanded from the video system connected
to the equipment.

The device allows performing radiography from the console and from the accessory via the
remote commands. The PXHP10B has 6 relays (from RL7 to RL12), with two contacts
each, allowing to command the BUCKYs and to activate the x-ray emission only
from the desired accessory. The sequence for a single shot can therefore be summarised
as: After an OVERBURNING (time to activate the node and to overburn the x-ray tube
filament) the relays of the accessory BUCKY command is powered ( RL7... RL12), thus
driving the corresponding BUCKY, which in turn will close the x-ray contact which is placed
in series with the second contact of the relay (XRPOTT1...XRPOTT6).
(without accessory), bridge terminal 1....6M10 (BUCKY x-ray contact of the selected
accessory( and the remote x-ray (XRCMD) terminals from 7 M10 to 12M10.

7.2.3 “ FOCUS”
If you select the menu " FOCUS " the display will show the following items:
This section is used to set the values to power on the filaments in standby mode for each
tube connected to the generator.
The left side of the window shows the values to activate tube 1: SF 1 = small
filament current for tube 1 [mA]
LF 1 = large filament current for tube 1 [mA]
The right side shows the activation values for tube 2, which will only be used if a second
tube is actually present in the system (SF2 e LF2)..
ITALRAY suggests the use of the following value as optimal setting for the
standby current for Small and large filaments 2.1 ÷ 2.5A
Once the desired current values have been selected by using the cursor buttons, save
them by pressing SAVE.
Once the values have been saved, the actual current in the filament can be checked by
pressing READ ;
This operation enables the readings for the filaments current for the selected tube, thus
also allowing to view the values on the left side of the window.
Meanwhile, the indication on the READ changes to STOP.
The value displayed for the current is given in mA and refers to the tube in use.
Before leaving the menu relating to Current Settings, exit from the current reading
mode by pressing the STOP button again; the EXIT button will appear in the labels.
7.2.4 “SERVICE”
If you select the menu " SERVICE " the display will show the following items:
This section is used to set the parameters for the "overburning", a particular stage
of the generator that precedes the exposure and during which the filament is
overheated and the anode rotation system is activated.
To speed up the heating phase of the filament in use, during overburning, especially
in radioscopy–radiography systems, the procedure consists in heating the filament
above the necessary temperature and then let it cool down to the correct
temperature to have the maximum possible linearity in the wave form of the anode
current. The aim is to obtain a good waveform in the minimum overheating time.
Three parameters shall be set:
Using the previous picture as example we can see that, when pressing the overburning
button, the system applies a current value to the working filament
equal to 5000 mA for 300 mSec, then reducing the current to the exposure value for 1200
mSec. After completing this operation, the system gives the READY signal.
The maximum current value to be set, however, is linked to the x-ray tube in use and
shall never exceed the level indicated by the manufacturer. (see XR tube manual).
Once the parameters have been set, press SAVE to confirm them.
The level of all previous parameters acts on the calibration of the anode current.
Therefore, in case of changes made after calibrating the x-ray tube current, these
settings should be checked again to ensure a perfect function of the system. We
suggest the use with a digital 2-channels oscilloscope connected ad described in
the following sections.
7.2.5 “ RADIO”
If you select the menu " RADIO " the display will show the following items:
This section is used to perform a complex calibration of the anode current for the x-ray
tubes connected to the generator in radiography mode.
The operation can be performed indifferently in AUTOMATIC and in MANUAL mode.
The preference for one of the systems can be determined by the fact that, with the
automatic system, the generator has to perform a higher number of exposures, thus
increasing the temperature of the tube.
The generator provides a real value for the anode current of the tube after each shot.
However, accuracy of the current value must be checked with a digital 2-channels
oscilloscope.
For this reason, all necessary set points are included on the generator main board
(GHFC01*).
[TP 1+, TP 1-] = kV
[TP 2+, TP 2-] = mA RAD
The operating criteria of this procedure is based on a very simple principle: the power on
value for the filament on the tube shall be fixed by using one of the operating modes and
will use a series of radiographic exposures in a short time of ca. 20 mSec.
SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 55 of 77
PIXEL HF TS MTEGHF02
To avoid this problem, the system is designed to split the voltage into several
10kV steps, assigning a correction factor for the filament current to each step in order to
compensate the above-mentioned effect.
When you press the AUTOMATIC mode calibration button the system is set and selects
the relevant exposure values: 70 kV and 20 ms.
When pressed, the button will change colour and label according to the selected
function.
Anode current does not change, since the value that will be calibrated is selected by the
operator.
After selecting the desired current value, push down and hold the x-ray button on the
generator operator console.
Following the operation from the monitor of the oscilloscope, you will see that the
generator performs a series of exposures with 20 mSec length and an interval of ca. 1
second between two consecutive exposures.
At each exposure performed in automatic mode, the generator increases the current value
to the filament while keeping the same anode current for the tube, thus causing an
increase in the anode current.
The sequence of exposures will end upon reaching the anode current value selected on
the display.
During the operation the system operations can be checked visually by controlling a series
of LEDs placed on the left side of the GHFP01* board.
A yellow LED with the XRAY (D14) label turns on. The XRAY button can be released only
when the operation is concluded. The calibration procedure is finished when:
- The XRAY (D14) LED is fixed
- The mA value stabilises
- The waveform of radiography mAs displayed in the oscilloscope does not
change
- A green OK message appears on the display.
Each time the button is released before the operation ends, the calibration values cannot be
stored. The operation must be repeated.
The complete calibration of the system includes the calibration of current values on both
focal points of the x-ray tube (or tubes, if the generator has been connected to two x-ray
tubes).
To shift the focal point, press the button with the corresponding symbol on the display:
With a small focal point, the set values will be 16, 25, 50, 100, 160 and 200 mA..
On the contrary, a larger focal point shall be calibrated from 16 A to the maximum current
value supported from the generator model.
To exit deselect the function by pressing the AUTOMATIC mode calibration button a
second time.
By pushing the MANUAL mode calibration button, the system automatically selects and
displays the correct relevant values: 70 KV and 20 mSec.
When pressed, the button will change colour and label according to the selected
function.
The anode current does not change as the operator will chose the current value to
calibrate;
This operating mode requires manual adjustment of the filament current by the operator in
order to reach the complete calibration of the system in a non-automatic mode.
The number on the display can be modified using the cursors and corresponds to the
filament current during the exposure time.
To successfully complete the operation you must therefore select a focal point with the
relevant key:
Select a suitable current value (start the calibration procedure for the current filament with
values around 3000mA and increase this value according to the wave form displayed on
the oscilloscope and the value readings on the console), press SAVE to save the value.
If you have the x-ray tube curves for the emission you can directly set the values derived
form the curves for the different anodic current steps; this method speeds up the
calibration procedure.
By pushing the x-ray button on the console, you will have a single exposure with 20 mSec
length; release the pushbutton when the x-ray passage ends.
The value for the anode current level will appear on the display; repeat the operation up to
reaching the desired value.
To complete the system calibration, repeat the operation for each current value to be set.
This mode (MANUAL mode calibration) is recommended for calibrating low current values:
16 – 25 - 50 mA, since the behaviour of the anode current flow during x-ray passage is
subject to a relevant deformation on its initial part. This is mainly due to well-known
phenomena relating to the length of the wires connecting to the tube and to its internal
structure, thus generating a 3 - 4 mSec current peak with a value definitely higher than the
value used in the rest of the exposure. This unavoidable effect causes a decrease in the
level of accuracy in finding the exact value for the anode current in automatic mode.
This side effect usually becomes irrelevant as the anode current increases over 50 mA.
After completing the procedure described above the system must cool down for a
few minutes. This is due to the fact that the whole operation usually requires several
"overburnings" with the corresponding powering of the rotating anode in the x-ray
tube, which inevitably cause overheating of the generator components.
To exit, deselect the function by pressing the MANUAL calibration button a second time.
In case a relevant error in the selected current value when changing the anode current is
highlighted while checking the last calibrations, the calibration procedure shall be
performed again at those anode current values.
7.2.6 “ FLUORO”
If you select the menu " FLUORO " the display will show the following items:
If the generator has a fluoroscopy option, the instruction in the FLUORO menu can be
used for its calibration.
Performing a fluoroscopy operation implies having longer radiographic exposures at
variable anode voltage and with low intensity currents.
The techniques used for fluoroscopy require the use of variable anode voltage from a
minimum (30 –40 Kv) to a maximum value (120- 130 Kv) with variable currents (0.8 - 5
mA). Performing a calibration for fluoroscopy implies the creation of a function linking the
anode current variation to the voltage variation with a predictable path.
In normal working conditions there are only two operating modes:
KV AUTO, where the anodic voltage variation depends on the system used for display
(ex. Traditional TV chain or digital acquisition system) in order to achieve an optimal
image quality level of the patient. The buttons that refer to Kv and mA for fluoroscopy on
the display are inactive.
KV MANUALE, the Anode voltage variation is controller manually by the operator in order
to achieve maximum image quality level for the patient. Buttons referring to kV variation
are active.
In both cases, current varies according to the variation rule set during calibration. When
SERVICE AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 58 of 77
PIXEL HF TS MTEGHF02
activating the Fluoro calibration menu, a third mode is enabled, since the kV and mA
variation buttons are enabled at the same time.
The correct calibration procedure of the fluoroscopy level requires the use of a double
track oscilloscope connected to the control board by using the corresponding Test Points.
[TP 1+, TP 1-] = kV
[TP 4+, TP 4-] = mA FLUORO
For the x-ray emission in fluoroscopy or radiography mode, connect a button between 11M5
and 3M5 on the PXHP10* board or on the accessory, if present.
Use the kV fluoroscopy variation buttons on the touch screen display and select the
minimum voltage value corresponding to 40 kV.
Use the mA fluoroscopy variations button on the touch screen display and select the
minimum current value (usually 0.8 - 1.0 mA).
Press the fluoro x-ray command and check with the oscilloscope if the current flow is
stable and shows a straight-line diagram.
Hold the x-ray command and press the Set Fluoro Limit button on the display. Then
release the x-ray command button.
Use the kV fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the maximum voltage
value corresponding to 125 kV.
Use the mA fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the maximum current
value (usually 4.0 ÷ 5.0 mA).
Press the fluoro x-ray command and check with the oscilloscope if the current flow is
stable and shows a straight-line diagram.
Hold the x-ray command and press the Set Fluoro Limit button on the display. Then
release the x-ray command button.
This operation was performed to fix the minimum and maximum limits for fluoroscopy as
for anode voltage and tension, the pattern of their relations is linear.
If this operation is performed correctly, in automatic mode the system will calculate the
following points. Point1 – Point2 – Point3 and the result is then immediately displayed,
giving the operator the possibility to check the saved data.
If the curve needs to be further characterised, inserting alternative passing points in order
to insert inclination variations, follow these additional steps.
The calibrations used to optimise the mA path on the base of the kVs are Set fluoro
Point 1, Set fluoro Point 2, Set fluoro Point 3.
For a non-linear variation, the kV value can be calculated mathematically by fixing the
intermediate mA values.
The complete formula is the following:
By inserting the values for the minimum and maximum current it is therefore possible to
easily obtain the kV value by inserting a current value between mA min and mAmax . This
equation allows to obtain three sets of mA, Kv values with a linear pattern, or three sets of
two values falling outside the line we found with the mathematic relation and which may
best suit the actual needs.
Use the following procedure to enter the correct values in the system:
Use the kV fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the maximum voltage
value corresponding to Set Fluoro Point 1
Use the mA fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the predictable current
value for Set Fluoro Point 1.
Press the fluoro x-ray command and check with the oscilloscope if the current flow is
stable and shows a straight-line diagram.
Hold the x-ray command and press the Set Fluoro Point 1 button on the display.
Release the x-ray command.
Use the kV fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the maximum voltage
value corresponding to Set Fluoro Point 2.
Use the mA fluoroscopy variations button on the display and select the predictable current
value for Set Fluoro Point 2.
Press the fluoro x-ray command and check with the oscilloscope if the current flow is
stable and shows a straight-line diagram.
Hold the x-ray command and press the Set Fluoro Point 2 button on the display.
Release the x-ray command.
Repeat this procedure for Set Fluoro Point 3.
For a complete set up of the Fluoroscopy system, you must specify a further parameter to
determine the speed used by the generator when adjusting the voltage upon request from
the video control station.
Increasing the KF value with the relevant arrows, the system inertia increases, thus forcing
the generator to adapt with a lower speed to the request coming from the video
connection.
On the contrary, by decreasing this value, adaptation speed will increase. Excessive speed
leads to, sometime troublesome, instability ad the voltage rate cannot stabilise and the
image has an unstable brightness.
On the contrary, an excessively slow pace implies longer adjustment times with an
overextended exposure of the patient to x-ray emission.
The right balance shall therefore be achieved by maximising adjustment speed while
avoiding annoying variations.
Suitable values are usually between 10 and 30.
To store the selected value, press SAVE.
A suitable regulation of the VT parameter when starting the x-ray emission in fluoroscopy
mode, on the contrary, delays the feedback for the kV regulation of the video system;
disabling this correction the system avoids initial current peaks, which would inevitably
send an image with an evident overexposure on the monitor.
This effect cannot be avoided completely as it depends on several factors, such as the
density of the subject under examination, the video system, etc. It is therefore only
possible to reduce this effect , since the result is a reasonable compromise. Suitable
values are usually between 200 and 800.
7.2.7. “AEC”
If you select the menu " AEC", the display will show the following items:
Push the AEC CALIBRATION to reach the calibration function for the automatic exposure
meter (optional);
Before calibrating the exposure meter the operator must understand how it works;
The ionization chamber located in front of an x-ray tube, when irradiated, provides the
measuring system with a voltage level proportionally increasing in time
(RAMP) with regards to the quantity of radiation (DOSE).
The exposure meter system connected to the camera detects this voltage level and
compares it with a reference voltage value. If this value is exceeded, exposure stops.
The reference value is not fixed, as it depends from the selected anode voltage, the
density value and the working screen, and is therefore established when calibrating the
generator.
An exposure meter functions correctly when, upon variation of the radiation dose absorbed
by the patient (anode current and voltage), it changes the length of the exposure time with
due accuracy in order to have the picture remain almost stable.
The variation range for anode voltage has a lower limit at 50 Kv and is divided into several
steps, as indicated in the following table, in order to compensate a non-linear response
form the reinforcement monitor of the cassette in use.
Range kV 1 50 kV 57 kV
Range kV 2 58 kV 66 kV
Range kV 3 67 kV 80 kV
Range kV 4 81 kV 115 kV
Range kV 5 116 kV 150 kV
The system already has a software that allows use of the exposure meter without
calibration; However, a correction of the calibration is needed and can be done by
increasing the four digit number in the AEC menu (by default the number is 0000). After
each correction press the SAVE button.
Correction procedures can be repeated for each kV range while maintaining the same
mAs.
Te procedure for a correct calibration of the system can be summarised as follows:
Start the operation by selecting a voltage value within one of the ranges indicated in the
above table, the set a suitable current value (see calibration examples in the following
pages. Use the cursors to select a number in the four digit register and save it by pressing
the SAVE button.
Perform several exposures on a dummy until obtaining an optimal result by only changing
the data on the four digit number in the AEC menu.
When this operation is completed, if calibration has been performed with due precision,
performing exposures with different kV on the same values will result in images with
equivalent optical density.
Complete the calibration procedure by repeating the operation for the three screenings
available.
In order to optimise the operation of the exposure meter, we suggest performing the
calibration one the diagnostic is installed and to use traditional cassettes, films, CR or DR
as normally used by the unit operators.
Activate one of the side fields and exclude the central one. Perform an exposure and
check that the result in mA is similar to the result obtained for the central field. Perform the
same operation on the remaining side field while excluding the previous one.
Complete the calibration following the indications of these tables and performing a first
detection of the O.D at 98 Kv with the thickness values indicated in the table.
7.2.8. “LANGUAGE ”
If you select the menu " CONFIG " the display will show the following items:
This section allows performing some not very frequent operations for the system
maintenance. Performing the following operations requires the use of a standard USB
memory stick of at least 512 MB.
Pressing the “BACKUP SOFTWARE & APR” button you will save a backup copy of the
executable software installed on the unit and all anatomical tables with the complete
customised patient information (APR).
Connect the USB stick with the cable provided within the console.
Press the backup button to automatically save the information.
Pressing the button “NEW SOFTWARE UPLOAD”, the consolle software can be updated
and the installed version can be overwritten with a newer one saved on the USB memory
Stick connected to the consolle.
