DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General

A. Purpose of the Equipment

The purpose of the S06 Emergency Locator Transmitter beacon is to transmit a digital distress signal to
satellites that are part of the COSPAS/SARSAT system. These satellites transmit the captured signal
directly to the reception stations on the ground.
This signal is transmitted on the 406 MHz frequency and is used to precisely locate and identify the S06
Emergency Locator Transmitter beacon. It also transmits a 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz signal to facilitate
the final approach in an emergency (homing).
This beacon is a Survival (S) basic type as define in the relevant specification (ED62 from EUROCAE &
RTCA DO-183/DO-204).
It is approved per JTSO-2C91a, JTSO-2C126, TSO-C91a and TSO-C126.
The beacon can be stored and transported in a semi-rigid bag or installed on a wall mounting bracket. It
shall be triggered manually.

3. Operation

A. General (Ref. Fig. 5)

S06 Emergency Locator Transmitter beacon operation centers around the activation board and the
triple-frequency transmitter board (406 MHz, 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz). The assembly is powered by
the battery pack.

As all survival ELTs, the S06 beacon is designed to operate in portable configuration.

The antenna must be connected to the ANT connector. Beacon operation is then controlled by means
of the TEST/OFF/ON switch.

B. Detailed Operation

(1)Power supply
The power supply to the activation board is ensured by the battery pack (set of 5 batteries,
15-16 VDC/4.5 A/h, lithium/manganese dioxide, solid cathode).
The triple-frequency transmitter board is powered through the activation board.
(2)Activation board
The activation board functions around a sequencing logic which controls the various light and aural
indicators, manages the self-test, and takes into account the orders from the beacon's TEST/OFF/ON
switch.
The self-test is performed by the transmitter board, and is managed by the activation board which
detects the presence of the battery voltage. It is performed automatically when the TEST/OFF/ON
toggle switch is placed in the TEST position (return automatically to OFF when released). Once it has
been completed, it indicates whether the beacon is ready to operate correctly. If this is not the case,
the LED will go out or blink and the aural indicator will LED display.
The board also manages various types of distress signal:
– manual distress.
Beacon activation shall be obtained by means of the beacon's TEST/OFF/ON toggle switch switch
to its ON position (pull and slide). The LED and the aural indicator indicate beacon activation,
– untimely distress.
The beacon must be shut down rapidly by switching the TEST/OFF/ON toggle switch to OFF,
CAUTION: IN THE EVENT OF UNTIMELY DISTRESS ACTIVATION, THE BEACON MUST BE SHUT
DOWN IMMEDIATELY AND THE CONTROL TOWER AT THE NEAREST AIRPORT
INFORMED. THE CONTROL TOWER MUST ALSO BE GIVEN THE "IDENTIFICATION"
MARKED ON THE BEACON LABEL.
– beacon shutdown.
The beacon is shut down by switching the beacon's TEST/OFF/ON toggle switch to OFF.
(3)triple-frequency transmitter board
The triple-frequency transmitter board is organized around a masked microprocessor. It ensures:
– generation of the digital distress signal,
– 406 MHz transmitter operation,
– 121.5 MHz and 243 MHz homing transmitter operation.
It also accomplishes the beacon self-test which is managed by the activation board. This self-test
tests the voltage supplied by the battery pack when it is submitted to its maximum load (current peak
due to 406 MHz signal transmission). The beacon transmits a 406 MHz signal and the LED/Buzzer
comes on for 50 s. This sequence is repeated once more, and then the LED/Buzzer starts to flash
rapidly for 50 seconds before switching to real distress mode displayed with alow rate flashing.
The Operator only has to check that the LED/Buzzer comes on for more than 10 s, in which case the
test is satisfactory. Otherwise, a maintenance procedure will be required. The beacon will then have
to be shut down by switching the TEST/OFF/ON toggle switch to OFF.
This self-test is not penalizing in the event of a real distress, signal transmission is just delayed by
150 s.
WARNING: DURING THIS 150S DELAY THERE IS NO TRANSMISSION ON 121.5-243 MHZ

A. Packaging
Note: If a local approved “parts packaging process” exist, It can be used as alternative solution.
– Pad all sharp edges and corners. Check that the protective cover (150) have been installed on the TC
electrical connector.
– Wrap the equipment in wrapping paper.
– Place the equipment in a plastic canvas envelope, with a minimum thickness of 0.2 mm.
– Place enough desiccant bags in the package to cover the surface of the equipment.
– Place an identification label inside the envelope, in such a way that it can be read from the outside.
– Extract as much air as possible from the envelope, and heat seal the envelope.
NOTE : Since the desiccant is a hydrophilic product, carry out the above operations as quickly as
possible.
– Attach two labels to the envelope, one specifying that the package contains desiccant, with the date
of packaging, and the other stating that it is prohibited to open the package, except to use its
contents.
– Place the equipment in a cardboard box in compliance with standard ATA 300 - Class 2, and fill the
empty spaces with packing material.
– Close the box and stick the following labels to the top:
. one label identifying the equipment,
. one label indicating that the contents has been protected with desiccant.

B. Storage
– The equipment should be stored in a clean, dry room, at a temperature of between -55°C and +85°C.
– Ambient temperature for storage is recommended in order to lower battery self discharge process.
– We recommend to store the equipment in its original package. Avoid stacking too high, which could
damage the packaging.
– Do not store the equipment near a corrosive source.
– The package should be placed in a position where it is quick and easy to check the label identifying
the equipment.
– Store the equipment on a first in first out basis (referring to the dates on the labels).
CAUTION : The storage duration must not exceed the activable duration of the battery.
On de-preservation of the equipment, check the expiry date on the battery label (40) and a
performance Radio Frequency test is recommended (see “Testing & Fault Isolation” chapter .

1. Introduction

A. General
The Illustrated Parts List (IPL) contains a list and illustrations of the assemblies and detailed parts of
the unit in disassembly sequence.
It includes the following sections :
– Introduction (INTRO), including a Vendors List (VL)
– Numerical Index (NI),
– Detailed Parts List (DPL).

B. How to Use the Illustrated Parts List

(1)To find the illustration for a part if the part number is known, refer to the Numerical Index and look for
the part number and the corresponding figure and item number. Refer to the Detailed Parts List and
look for the first figure and item number found in the Numerical Index for that part. If this figure
shows the part in a section or system of the equipment other than the one necessary, refer to the
other figure numbers listed in the Numerical Index.
(2)To determine the part number of a given part, refer to the illustration showing the assembly including
this part. Note the item number of the illustrated part and refer to the Detailed Parts List which
indicates its part number and description.

2. Vendors List
Manufacturer codes, which have the capital letter "V" in front of them, are used in the nomenclature of the
Detailed Parts List to identify the source of procurement for vendor items. A list of these codes and the
manufacturer name and address is given in the Vendors List. Where there is no code number the full
name of the manufacturer is included in the nomenclature column of the Detailed Parts List. Absence of a
code for non-standard parts shows that the item is a ELTA proprietary part.

3. Numerical Index (NI)

In this index the part numbers are classified in the following order:

classification is made from left to right, each digit (letter, numeral, dash) being considered separately.

The first left row ordering is:

– alpha letter A to Z (except for the "0" and "I", letters to be considered as zero and one),
– numeral 0 to 9.
For subsequent rows, the order is:
– dash
– alpha letter A to Z (except for the "0" and "I" letters to be considered as zero and one),
– numeral 0 to 9.
The part number column contains all part numbers included in the Detailed Parts List. Part numbers that
have been deleted or superseded within the Detailed Parts List are listed in the Numerical Index and
identified as deleted or superseded.

4. Detailed Parts List (DPL)

A. Figure and Item Number

Each assembly, subassembly and part carrying a part number and listed in the parts list is assigned an
item number.
The figure number linked with the item number is indicated on the first line at the top of each page.
Assemblies, subassemblies and numbered parts listed but not illustrated are identified by a dash (-)
preceeding the item number.
An index letter appearing before the item number is cross-referenced to the figure showing the modified
portion of the part concerned.

B. Manufacturer's Part Number

A manufacturer's part number is assigned to each assembly and detail part whether illustrated or not.

C. Nomenclature
The nomenclature uses an indenture system showing the relationship of parts and assemblies to their
next higher assemblies as follows:
1234567
Assembly
. Detailed parts for assembly.
. Subassembly
Attaching parts and/or storage parts for subassembly.
***
. . Detailed parts for subassembly.
. . Sub-assembly.
Attaching parts and/or storage parts for sub-subassembly.
***
. . . Detailed parts for sub-subassembly.
The attaching parts are shown directly after the assembly of the part thereof. They are listed under the
same indenture number as the item they attach, and are identified by the words "Attaching Parts" and
are followed by three asterisks.
The manufacturer's code or the abbreviation NP (not procurable) are placed at the extreme right hand
side of the first line of the nomenclature column.

D. Effectivity Code
An alphanumerical index indicates the effectivity of subassemblies and detailed parts list in relation to
the next higher assembly (ies) or subassembly (ies).
When the effectivity is fully applicable, the usage code column remains blank.
The usage code for assemblies and detailed parts refers to the figure/item number of the next higher
assembly (ies) or subassembly (ies).
Example: Effectivity 1A, 1B, 1C is written 1ABC.

E. Units per Assembly

The units per assembly column shows the quantity of units required for the next higher assembly.
In some cases, the information is replaced by the abbreviation RF (for reference) or AR (as required).
