CASE STUDY COPY CENTER

ProModel is one of the commercial software packages for simulation.

used in the market. It has analysis and design tools that, when combined
to the animation of the models under study, allow the analyst to better understand the
problem and achieve more reliable results regarding decisions to
to take. Basically, this product focuses on manufacturing processes of one or
various products, assembly lines and transformation, among others.

That is why it is important to define that the implementation of exercises supports

la toma de decisiones dentro de la industria e incluso en un proceso simple y
simple, however, it is important to have knowledge of all their
characteristics and components that lead to the desired outcome.

OBJECTIVE

Develop the copy center exercise to define variables, usage,

number of employees etc. this through the simulation tool
PROMODEL.
PROBLEMATIC

At a copy center, 3 jobs arrive. If a job cannot be started

Immediately, wait for a common pile until one of the three copiers is available.
The copying time and the input rate of the jobs are as follows:

Type of Work Entry Rate (jobs/h) Copying time (min/job)

1 4 12
2 8 15
3 16 1

After the copying process, the jobs are inspected by an employee.

in a time of 3, 6, 10 minutes for jobs 1, 2, 3 respectively. Simulate the
system in ProModel for 50 hours and determine:

a) The use of the employee and the copiers in the proposed situation,
b) Number of employees and minimum copiers necessary to ensure the
constant flow of work
c) Within the inspection, 90% of the work is done and the rest is sent
again to photocopy
d) Add three variables that allow counting each type of work which are
good and leave the system and likewise, add three other variables that
allow them to count the reworks.

DEVELOPMENT OF A CASE STUDY PROCESS

1. Enter ProModel and attach locations, where a row will be added.

2. Various icons are attached that will represent the locations.
3. The locations are attached and the NEW checkbox is deselected.
4. At each location, we change the copier at the locations.

5. We attached the inspection employee and he will have the ability of one
6. We will then add 3 entities and change the color of each one.
options.
7. After that we go to the arrivals section where we select the three
entities that will arrive at the FILA that we attach and in FIRST TIME it

the frequency will be zero if it changes, leaving Copier 1 with

15 minutes, Copier 2 with 7.5 and Copier 3 with 3.75 minutes.
8. The line will arrive on time at each of the copiers at 12, 15, and 1.

We will keep and note that the time that will pass will be 50 hours.
10. The same process will be developed by attaching the missing items for the following

LOCACIONES:

They represent fixed places in the system where entities are directed for the
processing, storage, activities or decision-making.

Para poder construir las localizaciones se crearan a través de la opción locaciones

In the build advantage, you will be able to edit the color and name,

ENTITIES

Anything that the module processes is called an entity, some examples

they include parts, products, people, and paperwork, usually attached in
the build table, which contains the entities, can be resized and the
name of the entity.

PROCESS

Processing describes the operations that take place in a location.

such as the amount of time the entity spends in that location, in the
necessary resources to carry out the work, and anything that happens in the
location, including selecting the destination for the unit.

ARRIVALS

Represents any new entity that is fed into the known system
as arrival, this represents what is added as MP in the processes or another type
of object within it, it can reach the entity or the location, QTY
each represents the amount per arrival, the number of entities, and in what
specific moments will come.

RESOURCES

A resource is a person, piece of equipment, or some other device or mechanism.

used to carry out one or some of the following activities; transporting
entities, supporting maintenance at the locations or carrying out the
maintenance of other resources.
It is defined as the desired tools to define the specifications and
the network of resources upon which one travels or assembles the resource.

APPLICATIONS TO THE COPY CENTER MODEL

LOCATIONS

1. In this section, we will add 5 locations which we will first add.

a row and we assign this same name, then we deactivate new and
we added a cross and we also added a text with the indicated name and
we activate new

2. Then, we will place an icon that resembles a 'copier' and it

we place the same name mentioned again, we deactivate the
function 'new' we placed the red cross icon, as well as the text of
corresponding name and we activate 'new'.

We position ourselves in the location box, because that's where the icons appear that
we have already put it, and we will see that there is the copier one, in this icon in the section of

We will place 3 'Units' as it is the number of copiers requested by our

problem; then we hit enter so that the 3 are automatically added
copiers.

3. Finally, we added an icon named 'inspector',

we deactivate 'new' and place the cross icon and put the text with it
nombre que corresponde y activamos “new”.

ENTITIES

Here we will place our raw material, specifically it's 3 for each one.
we will paste the name of 'Job_1, Job_2, Job_3'. Just as we will also
we will assign a different color to distinguish them, in this section it is what
the only one we will place.
PROCESSES

In this section we will be able to see that we have two boxes to put the
data corresponding to input and output. Below is represented
the data that we must include.

Input data

Entity Location Operation

Job_1 Fila
Work_1 Copy machine WAIT E (12) min
Job_1 Inspection WAIT 3 min
Work_2 Fila
Work_2 Copier WAIT E (15) MIN
Work_2 Inspection WAIT 6 min
Job_3 Fila
Work_3 Copy machine WAIT E(1) min
Work_3 Inspection WAIT 10 min

The data in the table is only entered by clicking on each of the sections and
to enter the Operation data, we must click on the same section, then
A box will appear with different icons and we click on the one that says "Build".
then in 'wait' from there to 'Distribution functions' and finally in 'exponential'. It is worth noting

clarify that this only serves to put 'WAIT E () min'.

To enter only the minutes, it is in 'wait' and we put the corresponding data.

box where we will put that the 'Run time' is 50 hours. In the replicas
we will assume it is 1 and with that the program is already simulated.

ARRIVALS

In this section, a box will appear where we will put the following
data

a) Entidad: Trabajo_1
Location: Line
Quantity Each: 1

First time: 0
Occurrences: inf
Frequency: P (15) min

b) Entidad: Trabajo_2
Location: Row

First time: 0
Occurrences: inf
Frecuencia: P (7.5) min

c) Entidad: Trabajo_3
Location: Line
First time: 0
Occurrences: inf

Frequency: P (3.75) min

RESOURCES

The resources used in this simulation were an operator which is the

in charge of receiving the work, the objective of placing the operator is more than
nothing because the simulation must not be incomplete, as the copiers
They aim to reach someone who will receive them.

CREATION OF THE MODEL IN PROMODEL

STEP 1: Open PROMODEL

STEP 2: Open locations and add row, copiers and the employee who is going to
inspect.

STEP 3: Open entities and add the three jobs.

STEP 4: Go to arrivals, we add the data provided by the problem for each
work, the case of the first job 60/4= 15 minutes in frequency, the second
Work 60/8= 7.5 minutes and finally the third work 60/16= 3.75 minutes.

STEP 5: Go to the processes where we will add the corresponding data for each
Route, the first process is in line and goes to the copier, it takes 12 in the copier.
minutes and in inspection 3 minutes, the second process is in line and is going to
copy machine, it takes 15 minutes in the copy machine and 6 minutes in inspection and the third
the process is in line and goes to the copier, it takes 1 minute at the copier and in

10-minute inspection.
STEP 6: We save the model, in simulation options we change the time
to hours and we set 50 as the problem indicates.

STEP 7: We run the model and visualize the results.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the case study, we can conclude that the use of

simulators are of great importance, as they help us appreciate different
situations, in different environments where one wants to carry out a
project, whether on a smaller or larger scale.
With this type of simulations, it is possible for us to obtain results.
quantitative, of the required parts or those that can be obtained
produce, adapting to the characteristics of the machines or hand of
work that is going to be used. Likewise, thanks to the simulators,
we can obtain the time it would take to complete a certain batch of order
pieces, these results are helpful to know how reliable
it could become the production in terms of delivery time and that
how advisable it is to undergo a certain procedure, helping to
reduce errors and, failing that, accidents.
