Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai

Moogambigai Dental College and Hospital were
founded in 1988 and 1991 respectively and both
were upgraded to a Deemed to be University status
as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute,
University in 2003. A.C.S. Medical College and
Hospital, Chennai started in 2008 has been brought
in to the ambit as a constituent unit, of Deemed to
be University by MHRD Notification. Raja Rajeswari
Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru has been
brought into the ambit, as a constituent unit of
Deemed to be University in 2019.

traditional mode of teaching & learning where
the student needs to be physically present in
classroom is not the only learning option

new era of learning — the era of online

EVOLUTION OF ONLINE PROGRAMS
AT DR.M.G.R. EDUCATIONAL AND
RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and
Thai Moogambigai Dental College were started
in the year 1988 and 1991 respectively. Both the
colleges acquired Deemed to be University status in
2003 as Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research
Institute as per the orders of the University Grants
Commission, New Delhi and the Union Ministry of Human
Resources and Development, Government of India.
Dr. MGR Educational & Research Institute, Deemed to be
University got UGC approval for offering 13 Online
Degree Programs in June 2021 based on A+ NAAC
grade (CGPA 3.48 on a four point scale). We set up a
“Centre for Online Programs” with a Director, Dean,
Head, Deputy Heads, and other office staff for facilitating
the administrative tasks. We started our first batch in July
2021 with a batch size of approx. 400 students and our
second batch in January 2022 as per the guidelines of
UGC. Since then we have evolved and grown in stature
with the numbers and geographical reach increasing at a
steady pace. We have good student diversity with students
from all across India and also from across the borders
studying with us.

 As we expanded and moved up the learning
curve we developed our technology and
Learning Management System making it
more efficient, interactive, and with better
learning resources for the student community.
Our faculty resources also increased with greater
number of qualified and technologically competent
faculty associated with us. The Online Programs
started with UGC recognised Degree Programs as our
flagship offering but gradually we diversified into new
categories. Currently we offer foreign language classes, and
skill based value add courses to improve the profile of the
learners. Besides this, we invite industry practitioners to
deliver Guest Lectures on various current & relevant topics.
Innovative offline programs like “Meet Your Batch Mates“ to
foster a sense of community among the students, unique
initiative of starting a Student Magazine called “Fly High”
and a student driven CSR Club called “Fusion of Friends”
are the other initiatives of the University. We have also
started providing placement training and support for our
students. The July 2023 is our fifth batch. Overall, reaching
the fifth batch of students is a significant milestone for us.
As of today our total student strength has crossed 2000.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MENTORS

The Mentors are mapped to 60 learners and they need to monitor them
on a regular basis. Mentors provide guidance, advice & feedback to their
Mentees.
The Mentors need to ensure that students are provided with all support
and are guided towards successfully completing the course.
The Mentor will act as a bridge between the teacher and the learner.
The Mentors need to check & ensure that every student completes the
assigned activities as per the timelines provided by the University.
