Opportunities TCS Ignite
The national employability report (2011) compiled by Aspiring Minds revealed that only 17.45 per cent of technical graduates in the country are ready to be employed. Create a backward integration into the supply chain by going to college campuses from where the IT industry gets people for its growth
The main objective of programmes like Campus Connect is to enhance the quality and quantity of the IT talent pool; sustain the growth of the IT industry itself.
How do such initiatives address the issue of man power availability?
There is a wide employability gap created every year by 70%-80% of graduates pass out who are considered unemployable (not skillful) by the growing IT sector and even remaining 20-30% undergo 3-6 months training. Thus such initiatives helps to bridge this widening skilled resource gap. In the long term such initiatives strengthen the brand equity and help ensure stable growth for the organization by keeping up with the latest industry trends through their technical trainings.
Long term prospects of running such initiatives
In future, the IT companies can tie up with top colleges and universities to ensure better quality of graduate intakes.
Currently for Campus Connect, Infosys trains the college faculty to impart the knowledge to graduates. In future, Infosys can employ specialized trainers for this purpose.
Long term prospects of running such initiatives
No significant improvement in productivity: These programs sometimes are not much of a value add to the students and might not actually improve the quality of the potential recruits.
High Attrition: The non IT students so recruited might not cope up with the technicalities of the job requirements and hence leave the job in a while.
Salary structure might create unrest: The science students, who are absorbed by the company are paid less as compared to the engineers. This might cause unrest amongst them.
Issues that could be created inside the organization
Retraining costs: The organizations might have to retrain the candidates so recruited.
The trainees can also join competitor firms for higher pay packages.
Rift between engineers and non-engineers: A divide might be created between the engineers and the science graduates, thus causing tensions.
Issues that could be created inside the organization
Instead of training the faculties (as in Campus Connect Program), who in turn train the students, the organization can use specialized trainers to train the students. This would improve the quality of training imparted.
Programs should be of longer duration (as opposed to Campus Connect program). The students who do not sustain their interest would drop and finally the organization would have genuinely interested candidates at the end of the program.
How can these issues be tackled?
The engineers can be asked to mentors the non-engineers. This might ease out the tension between them. Also the non engineers could learn from their mentors.
HR of the organizations should arrange for ice breaking activities and organize events encouraging employees to know each other better. This might help in decreasing the levels of unrest.
How can these issues be tackled?
