Basic of Addition

This document outlines a method for teaching basic addition and subtraction skills using the concept of "ten". It provides examples of: 1) Getting pupils to understand addition by grouping numbers to make ten, such as 4 bottles and 6 bottles equaling 10 bottles. 2) Having pupils memorize single-digit addition facts within 10. 3) Guiding pupils to decompose two-digit numbers in subtraction problems by separating into tens and ones, such as 14 - 8 being 10 - 8 equals 2, plus the 4 ones.

Basic skill of addition and

subtraction using the concept of to

be ten.
This is the easiest way to the pupils to solve the addition
and subtraction operation mentally.
First: The pupils must be taught how to get ten by adding
two sets of things.
Example:
10 bottles = 4 bottles and 6 bottle.
= 5 bottles and 5 bottles
Second: The pupils must be able to answer the addition
of one digit and one digit number within 10

Basic skills of addition using the concept

of to be ten.
Instruction:
First : The pupils must be able to set in two groups of
numbers within 18.
Example: 9 + 4 = 13
13 = 10 and 3.
Second:
The pupils must be guided that 13 is 10 and 3.
9 + 1 = 10.
Take out 1 from 4. 4 1 = 3.
So, 9 + 1 + 3 = 10 + 3.
= 13.

To build the strong concept the basic

of addition.
1. The pupils must be guided to build the concept
correctly.
2. Example:
+ 9 = 13.
13 is 10 + 3. 10 is 9 and 1.
Then 3 and 1 and 9 is 13.
So, 3 and 1 is 4.
3. Example: 4 + = 11.
11 is 10 + 1. 10 is 4 and 6.
Then 4 + 6 + 1 = 11. 6 and 1 is 7
So, 4 + 7 = 11

Basic skills of subtraction using the

concept of to be ten.
The instruction:
1. The pupils must be able to subtract one digit
numbers from another one digit number within 10
spontaneously.
2. The pupils subtract one digit numbers from two
digits number within 18 using the concept of tens.
Example: 14 8 =
a) 14 is 10 and 4.
b) 10 subtract 8 is 2.
c) Adding 2 and 4.
d) The answer is 6.

This module is useful to the pupils in year two until

year six to answer spontaneously the operation of
addition and subtraction of one digit, two digits,
three digits numbers or larger.
The most important outcome of this module is a
method to develop the thinking skill.

To use this module successfully , the pupils should

be able to add one digit number and one digit
number within 10.
The pupils also should be able to subtract a one digit
number from 10.
