Graphic narrative

April Darrell

Graphic novels:
All the batman films where inspired by the comics, the comics are for the target audience of teenagers and young adults-adults due to the violence and language used this is also the same for the films. The illustration is done in colour but due to the characters and the background being dark the colours used are only dark colours. The grid format is a little different to other comics, each page is also different using different sizes of each square/rectangle for the image to fit properly for the story to show. In this image they use balloon tails and joining balloon with connection to show the speech. Published 2011 200 pages long. Target audience: teenagers and young adults. Based on a film which is also called ghost world more happens in the comic than it does in the film, the illustration on all the pages are in the colour of baby blue and the images are drawn really well so you can see the detail of the characters this is laid out like a normal comic is but instead of 9 its in 6 grid format. Its also aimed at teenagers + due to its language as it uses strong swear words that aren't suitable for children.

Children's books
The cat in the hat By Dr. Seuss 1957. This story has been loved by children for years due to the way its illustrated e.g. colourful images and the way its written, its all rhymes and so easily with such easy words, such as cat and the hat. Its easy to follow for learning to read for ages 5+ since the words are so similar and its a good story for the parents to read to their children as its such a playful story. The story got made into a film such as many other Dr. Seuss books e.g. The Grinch that stole Christmas and the new one thats come out the lorax and theyve all been big hits to a large audience since its something the whole family can enjoy due to some adult humor that the children wont understand making it suitable for all ages. The Gruffalo By Julia Donaldson 1999. This story has become a hit with children since around 2005 and now its popular for kids with it having its own show at the theatre and film. This is simularto the dr. suess books as the words rhym making the story flow nicely but this one has more of a repeat story line like goldilocks and the three bears, but with different characters. This is something children love as it would be easy to remember and it gets them to discribe the different animals the mouse comes across. It can be read by parents and read by children from 6+ as it has got long paragraphs and hard words.
