Post Mortem Lividity: Suggilation, Post Mortem Hypostasis, Cadaveric Lividity, Livor Mortis, Vibices. P M Staining

Post mortem lividity, also known as livor mortis, occurs after death and causes a bluish or purplish discoloration of the skin in the lowest, dependent parts of the body due to blood and other fluids settling by gravity. It begins within an hour of death as blood can no longer be pumped by the heart and stagnates in the small blood vessels under the skin. The discoloration will not appear in areas that are compressed or have continuous movement and the patches will change as the body position is altered. The appearance of lividity helps estimate the time of death.
