IMFs Recruitment Policies

The IMF's Articles of Agreement mandate that "In

appointing the staff the Managing Director shall,
subject to the paramount importance of securing the
highest standards of efficiency and of technical
competence, pay due regard to the importance of
recruiting personnel on as wide a geographical basis
as possible." (Article XII, 4(d))

Exercise 1 Reading
Staff members are selected solely on merit. Where
equally qualified applicants are competing for the
same position, preference is given to candidates from
under represented countries or regions and every
effort is made to achieve a more balanced gender
distribution (e.g., more women in the economist
stream, more men in support-level positions).
The IMF's salary scale is designed to attract staff
of the highest caliber. Starting salaries are based on
candidates' training, skills, and work experience, as
well as on a comparison of their credentials with
those of present staff members.

Exercise 1 - Reading

To fulfill its responsibilities effectively, the

IMF draws on the experience and continuity
that a largely career staff provides. Since the
IMF expects that most of its staff will remain
with the organization for many years, it is
conscious of the need to provide the
compensation, training, and opportunities for
growth that will reward its staff.

Exercise 1 - Reading
Are these statements true, false or is there no
evidence in the text?

1. One of the recruitment policies is achieving a more balanced gender

distribution.
2. Preferences are always given to candidates from under represented
regions.
3. Work experience is not important for determining salary.
4. IMF knows that its staff will leave the company after only a couple of
months.
5. IMF organizes training for its staff.

2012 World's Largest Retailers

The Global Powers of Retailing list ranks global retailers according to total revenue. In 2012 the list
reflects the revenue that was generated in 2011, which was the early part of an intense global retailing
recession. Despite that, the changes from the last Global Powers list are surprisingly not all that
dramatic.
Most of the worlds largest retailers positioned in the top half of the list moved very little in their
rankings, if at all. Wal-Mart is still, by far, the largest retailer in the world. Frances Carrefour is still
#2. Germanys Metro AG overtook the United Kingdoms Tesco chain and claimed the #3 position on
the list. The top retailers in the top countries managed to maintain relative stability on the global
retailing stage.
There were a few big notable shifts in the worlds largest retailers, however. Norway and Lithuania
became global powers of retailing, joining this years list at #88 and #221, respectively. Iceland fell off
the list completely after its Baugur Group became a recession casualty.
Russia fell from the #15 position to the #107 position, the largest drop for any one country. Chinas
ranking fell from #63 to #90, and a new largest retailer emerged in that country. Spain, Finland, Chile,
South Korea, and Brazil also had new retail companies assume the position of being their countrys
largest retailer.
