BECK
INVENTORIES
Reported by: Rachel Ann Gumban
AARON BECK
Founding father of Cognitive-behavioral Psychotherapy
Has developed a series of inventories to assess
depression,
anxiety,
hopelessness, and
suicidal ideation (thoughts hurting oneself)
Has become the most widely used checklist instrument to assess the
severity of depressive
It has been revised and updated several time with the most recent version
(BDI-II) Publish in 1996
THE BECK DEPRESSION
It is a popular instrument for assessing the intensity of anxiety symptoms.
THE BECK ANXIETY SCAL
Assesses hopelessness about the future and
examines feelings regarding the loss of motivation
and expectation.
THE BECK HOPELESSNESS
Assesses suicidal thinking.
THE BECK SCALE FOR SUICIDE
Research demonstrate that the BECK SCALES are both reliable and valid.
These inventories often are used during an initial assessment evaluation
as well as during the course of psychotherapy to assess progress and
treatment outcome.
A checklist of over 100 problem behaviors are symptoms.
(e.g., disobedient of school, cries a lot)
The CBCL also include a series of questions concerning
childs activities, chores, friends and grades.
A pre-school and an adult version are also available.
Furthermore a Semis structured Clinical Interview
for Children and Adolescents (SCICA) and a
Direct Observation Form (i.e., DOF) are also available
CHILD BEHAVIOR CHECKLIS
A brief and multidimensional self-report measure
to screen persons for major psychiatric symptoms.
The SCL-90-R consists of 90 items scored on a
5-point scale, the reflect nine-validated symptoms
dimensions (e.g., anxiety, depression, interpersonal
sensitivity obsessions, psychoticism).
Reliability and validity research indicates that the
SCL-90-R personality testing seeks to obtain more
detailed, complex, and comprehensive data than
available from checklists and inventories.

Techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Computerized
Axial Tomography (CAT), and Poisson Emission Tomography (PEI), Scans to
examine physiological activity associated with mood and other
psychological states.

Polygraphs or lie director tests, measure physiological reactions by have
been highly criticized for being unreliable and invalid (Lykken 1991)
Whereas polygraphs measure physiological activity in a reliable and valid
way.
POLYGRAPHS
Equipment is similar to polygraphs in that it measure physiological activity.
Unlike polygraphs, biofeedback provides information to patients or
