Industrial Training Presentation

This presentation provides details on the construction of India's first signature bridge being built across the Yamuna River in New Delhi. The cable-stayed bridge will connect North Delhi to East Delhi and promises to be a major tourist attraction. It will have key features such as two carriageways supported by cable planes from the central pylon towers. The pylons will be made of steel boxes and will anchor the main cables and back-stay cables to support the bridge deck. Once completed, the signature bridge is expected to boost sustainability of transport and tourism in the region.

OUTLINE
Indias first Signature Bridge, being constructed across the
Yamuna River at Wazirabad, promises to be a great attraction of
New Delhi. An ambitious project of the Delhi Tourism & Transport
Development Corporation, the cable-stayed bridge will link
National Highway number one near existing T- point at Wazirabad
on Western bank and Marginal Bund Road at Khajuri Khas on
Eastern bank of Yamuna River, thus, connecting North Delhi with
East Delhi.

INTRODUCTION TO DTTDC

1989 -The Engineering Wing of DTTDC Ltd. was created

when the sale of the country liquor was assigned to the

DTTDC .
All the Engineers and accounts officials except AOs are

taken on deputation basis from CPWD whereas AOs are

taken on deputation from Comptroller General of
Accounts

In addition, the Engineering Wing was also responsible for

the construction of various landmark Delhi Tourism

Projects which were funded from DTTDC's own resources,
resources raised and grant-in-aid, etc.

Engineering Wing is headed by Chief Engineer with SEs,

EEs and AEs working under him, the number depending

upon the projects in hand. In addition, there is an Accounts
branch and Establishment section attached with the CE
office

CABLE STAYED BRIDGE

A Cable stayed bridge as one or more towers (or

pylons),from which cables support the bridge deck.

A cable stayed bridge is optimal for spans longer than

cantilever bridges and shorter than suspension bridges.

In a cable stayed bridge ,the towers are the primary load-

bearing structures which transmit the bridge load to the

ground.

ADVANTAGES OF CABLE STAYED BRIDGES

Much greater stiffness than the suspension bridge, so that

the deformations of the deck under live loads are reduced.

For a symmetrical bridge(i.e spans on either side of the

tower are the same), the horizontal forces balance and large
ground anchorages are not required.
The cables act both as temporary and permanent supports

to the bridge deck.

WELL FOUNDATION
16 Well foundations.

DESIGN OF SIGNATURE BRIDGE

DECK

PYLON

DECK
Two carriageways, typically 14.00 meter wide and

separated by a concrete crash barrier.

Each of the carriageways accommodates four traffic lanes.
I-shaped longitudinal main girders and I-shaped cross
girders at 4.5 meter intervals.
All structural steel is grade S355 , the pre-cast deck slabs
of concrete grade M50 span 4.5 meters.
The longitudinal movement of the deck at its western end is
250 mm approximately.

PYLON
The pylon consists of two legs made of steel boxes which

merge into one upper pylon zone.

Cables supporting the main span and the backstays are
anchored and interconnected.
The major part of the steel for the pylon will be of grade
S355.
In very highly stressed zones, grade S460 steel will be
used.
Each bearing has to transmit vertical forces of 170.000kN.

PYLON ERECTION AT SITE

CABLE
The deck is supported by two cable planes.
The cables are directly anchored to the webs of the outer

main girders at 13.5 meter distances with their dead end.

The cables will be made of bundles of parallel 0.6 strands
of grade 1770.
Depending on the location the number of strands per cable
varies from 55 to 123 nos. at the main span and is 127 nos.
for each of the backstays.

SUSTAINABILITY OF TRANSPORT

TOURISM

The recreational facilities are expected to cater to

visitors of all age groups.

Boat rides for tourist groups will be encouraged.
The tourism body has proposed to create water-bodies,
viewing points, parking areas, promenades and
winding walkways, making complete use of existing
topography.

CABLE STAYED BRIDGE

The upper portion of the

pylon anchors the back-stay

cables as well as the mainspan cables, arranged in a
harp like manner.
The self-weight of the pylon
balances out the self-weight
of the super structure
through the eccentric
location of its center of
gravity with respect to the
pivot point of the pylon
footing.
