An Introduction To Type of Jigs

Leaf jigs have a hinged plate that can swing aside to load and unload workpieces. The plate must be clamped firmly and horizontally for accurate drilling. Template jigs use the workpiece shape for location and are used for low-volume production. Plate jigs are like template jigs but have drill bushes for precision hole locations. Channel, pot, and box jigs hold workpieces in specific containment shapes to locate and drill holes in different orientations.

An Introduction To

Type Of Jigs

Leaf Jig
Leaf jigs are generally have a hinged jig (bush)
plate.
The jig plate can be swung aside to provide clear
path for loading and unloading the workpiece
from the top.
The jig plate must have positive resting face to
ensure that the axes of bushes are vertical
during drilling. ( i.e. the jig plate must be
horizontal to the drilling machine table)
The Jig Plate must be clamped against the
resting face by an EYE BOLT / QUARTER TURN
screw

The open slot in the jig plate and

swinging eyebolt facilitate quick clamping
and unclamping of jig plate.

The Jig Plate must be clamped against
the resting face by an eyebolt.
The open slot in the jig plate and

The Hand Knob needs to be loosened by

only half a turn and the eyebolt swung to
the position, in order to permit swinging of
the jig plate aside for loading and
unloading of the workpiece from the top.
Leaf type jigs are particularly suitable for
workpieces having location surfaces and
holes to be drilled on opposite sides.

TEMPLATE JIG
Template jig is the simplest and most basic jig
used in production. Such jigs of the same profile
as the workpiece and so they can serve as layout
guides for locating holes and contours or as a jig
for low speed production of accurate work piece.
Template jigs are generally made without clamp
and depends on pins, nests or part shapes to
reference them to the part.
Since template are the simplest form of jig, they
are used extensively in low volume production
such as prototype work or short run jobs.

PLATE JIGS
Plate jigs is similar in construction as that of
template jig, but it is an improvement of the
template jig.
Drill bushes are incorporated on the plate jig. The
plate jigs are employed to drill holes on large parts
maintaining accurate spacing with each other. In
this jig, the drill bushes guide the drills.
They are also used to secure the part so, they
provide high degree of accuracy and repeatability.

Plate jig

Angle Plate Jig

Angle plate jigs are primarily used to
machine parts that cannot be easily
machined with plate type tooling. Sizes are
varied according to the size of the work
pieces. Because of their design, they can
accommodate parts of various shapes. The
analysis and evaluation of work piece
begins before designing the angle plate
jigs.

CHANNEL JIG
This type of jig is of channel shaped and
sometimes is made from a standard channel
section material.
The workpiece is fitted within the channel. It is
located and clamped by rotating knurled knob.
Channel jig is limited to workpieces having
simple symmetrical shape.

POT JIG
Pot jig body is in the form of a pot in which the
workpiece is supported and clamped.
Circular workpieces which have both an
external and an internal diameter suitable for
location purposes are drilled in pot type jigs.
The jigs essentially consists of two parts.
The body in the form of a pot carries the
workpiece and also carries the bush plate.

TURN OVER JIG OR TABLE JIG

Turn over jig is so named because the workpiece

is located from the face that is to be drilled and
clamped in the jig.
Then the jig is turned over for drilling.
This jig is also known as open jig as the
workpiece is not having any enclosure of the jig
body around it. So, it presents no problems in
chip disposal.
The disadvantage of turnover jig is that only the
surface be drilled, loading and drilling forces are
generally directed towards the clamping devices.

BOX JIG OR TUMBLE JIG

This type receives its name from its shape which,
in general resembles a box.
When a box jig contains bushings on two or more
sides, for the purpose of drilling hole on different
sides of the part, it is referred to as a tumble jig.
After one face is drilled, the next side may be
drilled by simply flopping the jig to expose this to
the drill spindle.
The advantage of tumble jig is that greater
accuracy can be obtained and less part handling
necessary.

TRUNNION JIG
A trunnion jig is similar to a BOX jig. When a
large sized workpiece is to be drilled in several
faces, it is mounted in a trunnion jig so that the
faces requiring drilling operations can be turned
easily and positioned.
Every time, the jig is rotated and it is locked so
that the face in which the hole is to be drilled is
absolutely horizontal.
The pin and the locating hole for locking the jig
should be wear resistant.

POST JIG
The post jig is used to locate the drill plate.
The swing washer enable the drill plate to be
removed without removing the hand nut.
The post jig is also used for drilling and
reaming, a C washer is used to obviate the
need to remove the hand nut.

Angular Post Jig

The figure shown is an angular jig of welded

construction. The drill bush is extended and
shaped to prevent drill run, and yet allow
removal of the work piece.
The clamping nut is of the quick action type
because of the smallness of work piece bore
demands that the nut be removed when the
work piece is removed.

SANDWICH JIG
The sandwich jig is almost similar to a plan jig.
The only difference is the backup plate found on
the sandwich jig.
This backup plate allows the jig to hold very thin
parts that could bend or distort under tool
pressure.
The sandwich jig can also be used as a
combination jig in which one side of the tool is
used to locate the part for drilling.
The opposite side is used for reaming or tapping
the part.
