What is semiconductor?
A semiconductor is a substance, usually a
solid chemical element or compound, that can
conduct electricity under some conditions but
not others, making it a good medium for the
control of electrical current.
The most common semiconductor materials
are silicon and germanium.

History
The invention of transistors
In 1948, transistor was
invented by Bell Telephone
Laboratories.
These first transistors were
bipolar.
This technology allowed a
huge decrease in the size of

The invention of Integrated
Circuit
In 1952, Geoffrey Dummer presented the idea
of integrated circuits at a conference in
Washington, DC
In 1958, Jack Kilby was the first who bonded 3
transistor together
In 1960, Rober Noyce merged the idea with
Jean Hoemis planar process, and the first
modern semiconductor was born.

The development of
semiconductor industry
In 1960, semiconductor equipments begun to appear on
the commercial market and shortly after, in 1964, the
semiconductor industry surpassed $1 billion sales for the
first time.
The 1970s developed small chip sizes, allowing to
create small, powerful electronic devices. Price of chips
also fell as technology advanced and production
increased.
In 1974, the digital watch became the first product to
integrate a complete electronic system on a single chip.
The development of
semiconductor industry
The 1980s is often known as the period of early
maturity for semiconductors, and is the basis for
what we see today.
EDA (Electronic Design Automation) became
vital to managing the large scale integration levels
(LSI), which started at 10,000 transistors and
ended at 100,000 transistors.
The 1990s and 2000s was the boom in personal
electronic devices.

Introduction
Vietnam government places IC design and
fabrication as one of top priority programs to develop
from 2010-2020.
By 2017, the program targets to achieve a highvalue integrated IC industry worth $100-150 million
Saigon Hi-tech Park (SHTP) is one of favorable
destination for IC design and manufacturing
companies such as Intel, Signet design solutions, etc
Introduction
The Vietnamese government decided to set
up a wafer fabrication plant in Ho Chi Minh city.
The technology chosen for this first wafer-fab
is 0.18um/200mm costing US$300 million.
This fab will be able to make about 400
million chips per year targeting minimum
business revenue of about US$ 120 million/year
