BBFC

The BBFC is the UK's regulator of film and video content, assigning age ratings like U, PG, 12A, 15, and 18. A U rating means the film is suitable for ages 4 and up and contains no bad language, sexual references, or violence. A PG film is suitable for general audiences but may contain mild language or violence. Films rated 12A and some online content can have more mature themes, stronger language like the f-word, and low levels of violence. The 15 and 18 ratings signify increasingly stronger violent, sexual, or disturbing content unsuitable for younger viewers.

What is the BBFC?

The BBFC is the UKs regulator of film
and video providing age ratings such as, U,
PG and 12A. They are also a designated
body which have legal powers to rate, cut
or even reject works. They even rate some
online material.

U Rating
The U symbol stands for universal. It is suitable for the
ages 4 and up, however they are not 100% sure what
upsets every child.
There shouldn'tt be no bad language in them . Eg.
damn or hell
There will not be any sexual references except from a
cuddle or a kiss.
Violence is also very mild.

PG Rating
PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable
for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for
young children.
A PG film will not contain any theme which is inappropriate for
a child. PG works can explore challenging issues such as
bullying, bereavement or racism.
There may be mild bad language (such as shit or son of a
bitch) in a PG film, but the context and delivery are always
important.
Violence is mild which means there may be the occasional bit of
blood.

12 or 12A Rating
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12
contain material that is not generally suitable for children
aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A
film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.
The f word may be passed in a 12/12A.
There will be low level of violence and there could be a
bit of gore.
Sexual violence may occur but it will be brief.

15 Rating

No one under the age of 15 is allowed to buy or watch the film.

Things to expect in a 15:
strong violence
frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
portrayals of sexual activity
strong verbal references to sex
sexual nudity
brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual
violence
discriminatory language or behaviour
drug taking

18 Rating
18 rating is only to be bought or watched by adults
18 works are for adults and can contain strong issues such as:
very strong violence
frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language
(e.g. c***)
strong portrayals of sexual activity
scenes of sexual violence
strong horror
strong blood and gore
real sex (in some circumstances)
discriminatory language and behaviour

I would choose......
For my opening sequence I would rate it a 15. this is
purely because it involves a hostage which is battered and
bruised and you can see the struggle of her trying to
escape which could scare younger audiences. Also due to
it being a thriller majority of thriller films are 15 rating
and above due to there intense actions and behaviour to
enable to conform to the codes and conventions of a
thriller film.
