RF Optimization for Telecom Engineers

This document discusses RF planning and optimization. It provides an overview of RF planning, which involves coverage and capacity planning, calibration of planning tools, and frequency planning. RF optimization involves network analysis through tools to analyze KPIs, parameter tuning to improve KPIs such as call setup success rate and drop call rate, and traffic balancing through techniques like handovers. The document outlines GSM frequency bands, site types, factors that influence coverage and capacity, and remedies for issues like congestion. Key performance indicators that are optimized include call setup success rate, drop call rate, and handover success rate.

What is RF Planning?

Coverage and Capacity.

Calibration of Planning Tools.
Frequency Planning.

What is RF Optimization?
Network Analysis.
Parameter Tuning.
Maintain and Improve KPIs.

RF Planning
GSM Bands:
1. GSM 900 (P-GSM)
a) 890 915 MHz (Uplink)
b) 935 960 MHz (Downlink)
c) 124 : Number of Available ARFCNs.

2. GSM 1800 (DCS)

a) 1710 1785 MHz (Uplink)
b) 1805 1880 MHz (Downlink)
c) 374 : Number of Available ARFCNs.

Types of Sites:
1. Single Site
a) GSM 900 / GSM 1800 (DCS)
b) Single BCCH

2. Dual Band / BCCH Site

a) GSM 900 + GSM 1800
b) Dual BCCH

3. Concentric Site
a) GSM 900 & GSM 1800
b) Single BCCH

RF Planning
Coverage and Capacity:
Coverage:
Depends upon the area (e.g. Urban, Rural, Hilly, Highway)
Frequency is inversely proportional to the Wave Length
Which type of site should be proposed for highway (Considering
the long area but very low traffic) ???

Capacity:

Always comes with coverage area

Capacity must be known properly before deciding for Coverage
No. of radios must be finalized as per Capacity of the area

Traffic Handling:
Speech Codec's can be used to avoid initial
congestion
Expansion is the final Solution

RF Optimization
Network Analysis
1. Tools are used to extract raw counters in
statistical form (e.g.: Making Pivot Charts) to analyze the KPIs.
2. Log Files analysis using TEMS (RF Tool)
a) TEMS is an Ericsson propriety
b) Used for Air Interface Analysis
c) Provide information of all three functional layers of GSM
3. Parameter Tuning to improve KPIs as mentioned:
a) CSSR (Call Setup Success Rate)
b) DCR (Drop Call Rate)
c) HoSR (Handover Success Rate)

RF Optimization
Traffic Balancing
1. There should be a Preferred Band
a) Preferred Band is usually DCS (GSM 1800)
b) DCS is comparatively cleaner (due to less no. of losses)
c) No Massive Overlapping as in GSM 900 Band
2. Another appropriate method for traffic balancing is Handover
a) Handovers can be InterCell or IntraCell
b) Different Algos are defined for both types of HOs
3. In Idle Mode, C2 is the method to distribute traffic
a) Forces the MS to camp over neighboring cell
b) On the basis of perceived level of MS and CRO

RF Optimization
Congestion and its Remedy
1. Congestion usually occurs when there are less no. of channels available
than offered traffic (in Erlang)
2. How to Avoid Congestion???
a) General Capture HO ( Level Dependent )
b) Traffic HO
( Level and Availability dependent )
c) Directed Retry HO
( SD HO )
3. Another way to relief Congestion is QUEING
4. Final possible solution is Expansion

Major KPIs
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

CSSR
DCR
HoSR
Inc HoSR
IASR
Call Setup Blocking
SD Blocking

and many more.!!!
