FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS
(FDMA)
DEFINITION
Total System Bandwidth divided into narrow Frequency Slots/Channels.
One user, One Frequency Slot.
Often used in the first generation of analog mobile phone.
NUMBER OF CHANNELS IN FDMA SYSTEM (N)
f 2 guard
N
c
f - total spectrum
guard - guard band
c - channel bandwidth
GENERAL SPECIFICATION OF FDMA
Transmitter : 824-849MHz Receiver : 869-894MHz
DQPSK modulation scheme.
48.6kbps bit rate.
Uses Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD).
ISI (Inter symbol Interference) is low.
GENERAL SPECIFICATION OF FDMA
Used in analog cellular phone systems.
Example : AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System)
1st Generation Technology.
Each user allocated 2 simplex channels.
Another user can be allocated the empty channel after handoff/ call
completion.
ADVANTAGES OF FDMA
Channel bandwidth is relatively narrow (30kHz).
Simple algorithmically, and from a hardware standpoint
FDMA can be used with both analog and digital signal.
Due to the frequency filtering, FDMA is not sensitive to near-far problem.
DISADVANTAGES OF FDMA
If channel is not in use, it sits idle.
The presence of guard bands.
Maximum bit rate per channel is fixed.
Higher cell site costs.
