During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines from 1942-1944, Philippine literature in English was suppressed as there was no freedom of speech or press. Most writers either went underground or wrote in Tagalog to avoid censorship. After the war, Filipino literature received renewed attention as writers in English switched to writing in Filipino. Tagalog poets broke from traditional forms and wrote in simple, free verse as fiction became more prevalent than poetry. Several notable works were published during this period.
