Preventing Environmental Degradation

The document discusses ways to prevent environmental degradation. It identifies several human factors that can accelerate or cause environmental degradation, including urbanization, population growth, intensive agriculture, increased energy and transportation, air and water pollution from industries. It also discusses natural factors like drought, storms, and volcanic eruptions. Some effects of environmental degradation include deforestation, erosion, pollution, and species extinction. The document recommends ways to prevent further degradation, such as environmental awareness, population control, conservation laws, controlling industrial and agricultural pollution, afforestation, waste management, and improved housing.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION
Environmental
degradation is a process
through which the
natural environment is
compromised in some
way, reducing biological
diversity and the
general health of the
environment. This
process can be entirely
natural in origin, or it
can be accelerated or
caused by human
activities.

WHY ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION ?
 Environmental changes are based
on many factors including:
 Urbanization
 The Population Explosion
 Intensification of agriculture
 Increase in energy use
 Increase in transportation
 High quantity of Exhaust gases
 Secondary Pollutants
 High number of industries such as
mining
 Chemical effluents
 Unplanned Land-useTHINK GREEN , GO GREEN
policies
FACTORS OF ENVIRNMENTAL
DEGRADATION
There are basically two
factors namely: Deforestation

1. Natural factors such as

drought, storms on sea, land
and deserts such as
hurricanes, tornadoes, Emmision desertification
carina and volcanic
eruptions. These factors types
lead to land degradation
through erosion.
2. Human factors which
include deforestation,
industrialization and errosion extinction
urbanization. These factors
lead to water, air and land
pollution.

EFFECT OF

When land G RbyAanimal

TION
there can be mechanical erosion and also
removal of vegetation leading to erosion.
 In the case of the animal kingdom, this effect
would become material primarily with very
large animal herds stampeding such as the Blue
Wildebeest on the Serengeti plain.
 This effect may be viewed as anomalous or a
problem only when there is a significant
imbalance or overpopulation of one species.
 In case of human, the effects are also generally
linked to overpopulation. When large number of
hikers use trails or extensive off road vehicle use
occurs, erosive effects often follow, arising from
vegetation removal and furrowing of foot traffic
and off road vehicle tires.

Preventing the deterioration

 Social Awareness
 Population Control
 Strict Application of Environment Conservation Act
 Control over Industrial and Agricultural Pollution
 Afforestation Campaign
 Water Management
 Management of Solid Waste
 Improvement in Housing

CONCLUSION
Most of the natural resources including environment
in India are in a serious state of degradation due to a
variety of reasons, some of which are natural and
some man-made. To sum up, we could say that we
now have the requisite knowledge of tools,
techniques and instruments of environment
management available in India and we also have a
National Environment Policy in vogue. What we need
is a strong political will at the national and state
levels and a congenial political and economic
environment to use appropriate measures to mitigate
the problems of environmental degradation in the
large interest of society as a whole.
