Aspirin has a long history dating back to its use in ancient Greece and Egypt. It was isolated and purified in the 1800s and synthesized into its modern form of acetylsalicylic acid in 1897 by Felix Hoffman. Aspirin works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes and is effective as an analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory drug. It also helps prevent heart attacks and strokes by inhibiting platelet aggregation. While effective, aspirin can cause side effects like stomach ulcers, and newer alternatives like rivaroxaban that are more effective are being studied.
