MPPT Charge Controller For Solar Stand Alone System: Project Guide Team Members

This document summarizes a student project to design an MPPT charge controller for a standalone solar system. The proposed system connects a PV panel to a DC-DC boost converter with MPPT control logic to extract maximum power from the panel. A battery storage unit with charge controller regulates power flow between the solar panel and load. A closed-loop positive buck-boost voltage regulator maintains a constant voltage to satisfy load requirements. The control strategy uses incremental conductance-based MPPT control of the boost converter and closed-loop regulation of the buck-boost converter. The team is simulating components in Matlab including the PV module, boost converter, MPPT algorithm, and battery charging techniques.

In our proposed system, PV panel is connected to the DC-DC
boost converter with MPPT control logic to extract the
maximum power from the PV panel irrespective of solar
irradiation. Battery storage unit with charge controller is
connected in between solar panel and the load unit, as it is used
to produce backup power and power regulation between source
and load. Closed loop Positive Buck-Boost voltage regulator is
used for voltage regulation to produce constant voltage to satisfy
load requirements. The control strategy of the proposed system
is done by two components, 1) Incremental Conductance based
MPPT control logic with DC-DC boost converter. 2) Closed-
Loop positive Buck-Boost converter based voltage regulator

MPPT CHARGE CONTROLLER

This method exploits the assumption of the

ratio of change in output conductance is equal to the
negative output Conductance Instantaneous
conductance.
P=VI
Applying the chain rule for the derivative of
products yields to
∂P/∂V = [∂(VI)]/ ∂V
At MPP, as ∂P/∂V=0
The above equation could be written in
terms of array voltage V and array current I as
CONVERTER

∂I/∂V = - I/V
The MPPT regulates the PWM control
signal of the dc – to – dc boost converter until the
condition: (∂I/∂V) + (I/V) = 0 is satisfied
