Well Control in Ubd

The document discusses well control barriers in underbalanced drilling (UBD). The primary well control barrier in UBD is a non-return valve rather than hydrostatic pressure from mud. It is important to have multiple non-return valves and to monitor for increased flow rates or choke pressures that indicate a well kick. Well killing in UBD for a depleted reservoir can be achieved by circulating heavier fluid to increase bottomhole pressure. UBD can increase oil production and recovery if properly planned and executed with well control barriers in place.

Objective

• Introduction to Underbalanced Drilling (UBD)

• UBD Candidate Selection criteria
• Well control Barrier in different life cycle
• Well Control Aspects
• Summary & Conclusion
Well control Barrier in UBD

In convectional drilling,
PRIMARY WELL CONTROL = HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF MUD

Primary
Flow &
Drilling HP of well
RCD PRESSURE
NRV fluid control in

Rotating UBD CHOKE
Control Device

Secondary Barrier – BOP and Rig Choke

Primary Well control Barrier -Non Return
VALVE (NRV)
• Primary barrier to restrict back flow in drillpipe
• Minimum 3 recommended –
• 2 in BHA, 1 near surface
• Additional valve added to decrease bleed off time
during connection
• NRV failure , leak or drill string failure above the NRV- results
in an uncontrolled release of hydrocarbon fluids to surface
• To mitigate risk of failure
• Back up NRV in Drill-string
• Proper design & string position
• Training to replace failed NRV
• NRV (FLAPPER TYPE)
How to detect kicks in UBD ?
Primary Indicator – Increased flow rate

Higher
Higher flow rate
permeability

Higher
Larger Higher flow
reservoir
drawdown rate
pressure

Poor choke Higher flow

Lower BHP
control rate

Secondary Indicator
– Increased choke pressure (without setting choke)
– Higher ROP
Well Killing in UBD
•Dynamic well control is most suitable for depleted
reservoir :
•Modify choke position
•Increase surface back pressure
•Modify Liquid rate or properties
•Increase Liquid Injection fluid
•Decrease Gas Injection Rate

As the reservoir pressure is 4.5 ppg EMW, well killing can be

controlled by circulating over to clean crude oil/base oil at
6.8 ppg & stop pumping Nitrogen Gas Injection.
Summary & Conclusion

Initial Production results show that wells are

producing 1.8 x more oil with lower watercut than
comparative wells
BHP & influx can be monitored & controlled by
means of RCD, flowline, choke & surface separation.
Well control Barriers in UBD can be managed with
specialized training, planning and execution.
UBD can be used for right candidate to enhance the
recovery factor as well as total oil production.
