Sampling Distribution of Sample Means
Sampling Distribution of Sample Means
of Sample Means
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, all the students are expected to:
1. illustrate random sampling;
2. distinguish between parameters and statistics; and
3. construct sampling distribution of sample means.
ACTIVITY
CONSTRUCTING FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION
The following are the blood type of a group of individuals in a
government office. Construct a frequency distribution for the
different blood types.
Sample Frequency
A O B A AB A 4
B O B O A
B 7
B B O O O
AB 4
AB AB A O B
O B O AB A O 9

COMPUTING FOR THE MEAN OF A SAMPLE
Find the mean of the following sets of numbers.
Given Mean
10,4,8,3,2 27/5 or 5.4
6,10,9,12,4,5 23/3 or 7.67
12,2,5,7,11,8,4 7
14,10,15,11,17,19,20 106/7 or 15.14
20,24,22,18,14,25,26,28 177/8 or 22.125
Evaluating Combination of N Object Taken n at a
Time
1. 6∁3 = 10
2.8∁4 = 70
3. 9∁6 = 84
4.10∁3 = 120
5.12∁8 = 495
Random Sampling
- a method of selecting a sample (random
sample) from a statistical population in such a
way that every possible sample that could be
selected has a predetermined probability of
being selected
Sample
- is the subgroup of a target population.
Population
- is the set of all people, objects, events, or numbers wish to
investigate.
number of events
Probability (P(x)) =
number of possible outcomes
Sampling Distribution of the Sample Means
2. List all the possible samples and compute the mean of each
sample.
3. Construct frequency distribution of the sample means obtained
in step 2.
Example:
A population consists of the numbers 2,4,9,10, and 5. List
all the possible samples of size 3 from this population and
compute the mean of each sample.
a. N=4
b. N=8
c. N=20
d. N=50
e. N=100
2. A group of students got the following scores in a test:
6,9,12,15,18, and 21. Consider samples size of 3 that
can be drawn from this population.
a. How many samples can be drawn?
b. List all possible samples and corresponding means.
c. Construct the sampling distribution of sample
means.
d. Draw a histogram of the sampling distribution of
the means.
Assignment:
Draw Cards
Samples of three cards are drawn at random from a
population of 8 cards numbered from 1 to 8.
