Analysing a movie
Hi all, this is a small attempt made by us to
analyse the very comical film ,
Mr. Bean’s Holiday.
We are going to analyse the movie for it’s
barriers to communication and non-verbal
communications.
So, enough of all serious stuff, let’s get to the
interesting part.
We chose this movie for analysis as it involves
plenty examples on non verbal communications
among bean and the cast .
PLOT OF THE MOVIE
• Mr. Bean enters a church raffle and wins a vacation trip to France as well as a
camcorder. After boarding a Eurostar train and arriving in Paris, the French
language proves a barrier for Bean, as he struggles to get across the city to
catch a train to the south of France . While ordering a meal, he finds the
consumption of a seafood platter to be a challenge. Just before catching his
train, he asks Emil, a Russian film director on his way to be a judge at the
Cannes Film festival to use his camcorder to record his boarding, but
accidentally Emil is left behind at the station. Bean attempts to cheer up the
director's son Stephan in the train but matters are made more hectic by the fact
that Emil has reported his son to have been kidnapped and Bean losing his
wallet and essential travel documents at a pay phone where he and Stephan
attempt to contact Emil. Heading in the direction of Cannes, Bean finds
himself in the cast and disrupting the flow of a commercial being shot by the
egotistical director Carson Clay. He and Stephan finally hitch a ride with the
young and vivacious actress Sabine who is heading to Cannes to attend the
premiere of Clay's film, in which she appears. After Bean sneaks into the
showing, his camcorder images are destined to enliven the proceedings.

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Non-verbal communication between people is
communication through sending and receiving
wordless clues. It includes the use of visual cues such
as body language (kinesics), distance (proxemics) and
physical environments/appearance, of voice
(paralanguage) and of touch (haptics). It can also
include chronemics (the use of time) ,eye contact and
the actions of looking while talking and listening).
Types of Non-Verbal Communication
Kinesics
Proxemics
Chronemics
Kinesics
Kinesics is the interpretation of body motion
communication such as facial expressions and
gestures, nonverbal behaviour related to
movement of any part of the body or the body
as a whole
• PERSONAL
APPEARANCE
It suggests an important
role .People see you
before they hear you .
Not only you have to
adapt your language for
your audience but also
dress accordingly.
Appearance of the lady
suggests she is a crew
member . A smile on her
face depicts a warm
welcome to the
passenger(bean).
• Posture:
Posture generally refers to
way we hold ourselves when
we stand, sit or walk. One’s
posture changes according to
situation.
The image here
shows a typical
posture of Bean
being extremely
happy.
• Gesture:
A gesture in an intentional body movement to
convey a message. Many different attitudes and
intentions are expressed through gestures.
Gesture includes communication through eye
contact, body posture, hand signals, and facial
expressions.
Through the
gesture made
by his hand in
this picture,
Bean is
suggesting that
the food is
delicious.
• Facial Expressions:
Communication using Facial expression and other
nonverbal cues boost our understanding. Facial
expressions include smiling, frowning, eye rolling,
making eye contact, scowling, and appearing
bored or interested.
It is clearly seen that the
boy is completely
annoyed with Bean as
his father has just missed
the train to Cannes due
to Bean’s mistake.
• Eye contact:
Eye contact is a type of nonverbal communication
that is strongly influenced by social behavior. In the
western civilizations, eye contact is most often
defined as a sign of confidence.
The actor
shown in the
scene forgets
the name of his
partner due to
which she gives
a steady eye
contact to show
that he is at
fault.
Proxemics
It is study of physical space in interpersonal
relationships.
• Intimate Zone:
This zone starts with personal touch and extends just to 18
inches . Members of family ,lovers ,spouses , relatives and
family fall under this category.
This scene involves
the affection
shared among
parents and their
child.
Personal:
This zone stretches from 18 inches to 4 feet. Close friends,
colleagues, peers fall in this zone. This involves normal
conversation.
This picture shows
the friendship between
Bean and Sabine
(actress).
social:
Social events take place in radius of 4 feet to 12 feet. In
this zone relationships are more formal and official.
People are more cautious in their movements. The
number of people decides whether it should be sitting
or standing.
Here both of them are
passengers in the
metro to the cannes .
Public:
It starts from 12 feet and extend to 30 feet or to the
range of eyesight and hearing . The degree of
detachment is very high . The audience is free to do
whatever it feels like.
In this scene ,
everyone on the
beach say good-
bye to the
audience.
Chronemics
• Chronemics is the study of how well human beings
communicate through their use of time.
In this scene bean
was unable to
board the metro
before it departed.
He got late as his
tie got stuck in the
machine.
BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION
The term communication barrier is an expansion of the
concept of noise . Noise is defined as any unplanned
interference in the communication environment , which
causes
hindrance in the transmission of message . Noise distorts
interpretation or decoding part of the communication process.
1. INTRAPERSONAL BARRIERS
• Varied perception
• Wrong assumption
• Wrong inference
• Differing background
• Categorial thinking
• Impervious categories
Wrong Inference
• In this scene bean reads his ticket
number as 616 instead of 919 which
made him believe that he didn’t win.
Later when he saw his ticket on the
toy he realised his mistake
Wrong Assumptions
• Wrong assumptions are
generally made because the
sender or the receiver does
not have adequate
knowledge about the other’s
background or entertains
certain false concepts, which
are fixed in his/her mind.
• In this scene, driver assumes
that it was the other man
that had sat in the backseat
of the car and bean thought
that the driver was the
former cab-driver.
Differing Background
People vary in terms of their culture , language , environment
etc. At times , something not experienced by you earlier
Will be difficult to interpret or appreciate.
Mr bean couldn’t
understand French
language, so when
waiter asked if he
would like to order sea
food ,he replied
“qui”(which means yes
in French )without
knowing the meaning
of it.
1. INTERPERSONAL BARRIERS
• Noise in the channel
• Emotional outburst
• Cultural variation
• Communication selectivity
• Limited vocabulary
• Poor listening skills
• Mismatch of verbal and non verbal messages
Limited vocabulary
An inadequate vocabulary can be a major hindrance in
communication .During your speech if you are at a loss for
words ,your communication will be ineffective.
Mr bean didn’t know
French and was just
mumbling , thinking he
was speaking in French .
Therefore he wasn’t able to
convince the lady for giving
him some money.
Emotional Outburst
It refers to a sudden spoken expression of
a strong feeling especially anger.
In this scene Carson Clay
is unable to convey his
messages as he is
egoistic and annoyed by
Bean’s comical actions
during his film shooting.
Noise in the channel
Noise is any unwanted signal
that acts as a hindrance in the
flow of communication. It is
not necessarily limited to
audio disturbances, but can
also occur in visual, audio-
visual, written, physical, or
psychological forms.
Here the man tried to convey
his mobile number to the
child and bean but accidently,
last two digits of the number
were hidden by his fingers.
Thank you!!
