AC Potentiometer Basics & Uses

The document discusses the AC potentiometer, which measures unknown voltages in terms of both magnitude and phase. There are two main types: polar-type which measures magnitude and phase directly, and regular coordinate type which uses other measures. AC potentiometers are used to calibrate voltmeters, ammeters, energy meters and for other applications. Compared to DC potentiometers, AC potentiometers require both voltage magnitude and phase to be equal for balance, use a vibration galvanometer as the detector, and are generally less accurate and more complex.

Objectives :
 To state the basic requirement of A.C potentiometer
 To recognize the types of A.C potentiometer
 To discuss its Applications
 To differentiate the D.C and A.C potentiometer
Basic Requirement of A.C Potentiometer
 Both the voltage being compared must be equal with respect to magnitude and phase.
 Measure the potentiometer voltage accurately.
 The a.c. source must supply exactly sinusoidal signal.
 Control of stray e.m.f.s in field and coupling circuit.
Types of A.C potentiometer
Polar-Type A.C Potentiometer
Measures the unknown e.m.f. in polar form , i.e. terms of its magnitude and relative phase.

Regular coordinate Type A.C Potentiometer

Measures the unknown e.m.f. in terms of its regular co-ordinates.
Application
