SYMBOL OF HUMAN BECOMING THEORY

Black and white = opposite paradox significant to ontology of human

becoming and green is hope

Center joined =co-created mutual human universe process at the

ontological level & nurse-person process

Green and black swirls intertwining = human-universe co-creation as an

ongoing process of becoming

Assumption Of Human Becoming
The human is:
 Co-existing while co-constituting rhythmical patterns with environment .
 Open, freely choosing meaning with situation, bearing responsibility for decisions.
 Transcending
Becoming is:
 unitary human-living-health.
 Rhythmically constituting human universe
 Human’s value priority patterns
 Transcending with possible
 Unitary Human’s emerging

3/31/2019 9
MAIN CONCEPT :
Meaning: An ever changing interpretation one gives to what is valued
and the ways in which these interpretations reflects the persons reality.

Rhythmicity: The cadent mutual pattering of the human-universe

mutual process.

Transcendence: Reaching beyond the possible the hopes and dreams

envisioned in multidimensional experiences.

3/31/2019 10
PRINCIPLE 1:
Meaning: An ever changing interpretation one gives to what is valued
and the ways in which these interpretations reflects the persons reality.

 Imaging (reflective pre-reflective)

 Valuing (confirming---not-conforming)
 Languaging (speaking-being silent
moving—being still)

3/31/2019 11
MAIN CONCEPT
Valuing: A person’s choosing , prizing, and acting on those symbols that have
meaning in the person’s life.

Imaging : Picturing meaning from both concrete experience and from imagined
experience, this imaging is both spontaneous to and personal to each individual’s
worldview.

Languaging: Sharing valued images through symbols of words, gestures, gaze,

touch and posture ; the way human beings represent personal structures of reality .

3/31/2019 12
PRINCIPLE 2:
Rhythmicity: The cadent mutual pattering of the human-universe mutual
process.
 Revealing-Concealing
 Enabling-Limiting
 Connecting--Seperating

3/31/2019 13
PRINCIPLE 3:
Transcendence: Reaching beyond the possible the hopes and dreams
envisioned in multidimensional experiences.
 Powering
 Originating
 Transformation

3/31/2019 14
MAIN CONCEPT
Powering : The pushing resisting process of affirming not affirming in the light of nonbeing.

Originating : Inventing new ways of conforming-nonconforming in the certainty-

uncertainty.

Transforming: Shifting the view of the familiar-unfamiliar, the changing of change in co-
consituting anew in deliberate way.

METAPARADIGMS
Human: intentional beings involved with their world , having a fundamental nature of
knowing being present, and open to their world(Parse, 1998) The human is one who coo
participates in the universe in creating becoming and who is whole open and free to choose
ways of becoming.

Health: A way of being in the world ;it is not a continuum of healthy to ill, nor is it a
dichotomy of health or illness ,rather it is the living of day-to-day ways of being.

3/31/2019 16
ROSEMARIE PARSE
Environment: The world, the universe , and those who occupy spaces along with others
who freely choose to be in situation.

Nursing: Grounded in the view that the human is a unitary being who is free to choose in
situations , nursing is guiding humans towards ways of being, finding meaning in situations,
choosing ways of cocreating their own health, are living true presence in the day-to-dayness of
the person’s reality

ADVANTAGES/Strengths
 Differentiates nursing from other disciplines.
 Practice - Provides guidelines of care and useful administration.
 Useful in Education.
 Provides research methodologies.
 Provides framework to guide inquiry of other theories (grief, hope, laughter, etc.).

3/31/2019 18
ROSEMARIE PARSE
Limitations/weakness
 Research considered to be in a “closed circle”.
 Rarely quantifiable results - Difficult to compare to other research studies, no control
group, standardized questions, etc.
 Does not utilized the nursing process/diagnoses.
 Negates the idea that each person engages in a unique lived experience.
 Not accessible to the novice nurse.
 Not applicable to acute, emergent care.
