IC 723 Voltage Regulators

The 723 voltage regulator uses negative feedback to automatically maintain a constant output voltage level. It can be configured for both positive and negative output voltages. The 723 has two sections - one produces a fixed 7V reference voltage, and the other contains an error amplifier that compares the reference to the output and controls two pass transistors to minimize any difference. Additional circuits can provide overcurrent protection, short circuit protection, and current limiting capabilities to prevent the regulator from overheating under heavy loads.

723 General voltage Regulators

What is Voltage Regulator ?

A voltage regulator is a system designed to automatically
maintain a constant voltage level. A voltage regulator
may use a simple feed-forward design or may include
negative feedback. It may use an electromechanical
mechanism, or electronic components. Depending on
the design.
Why we are going for 723 ?
There is also a three terminal regulator but it
has some limitations such as
• No Short circuit protection
• Output voltage is fixed (positive or negative )
This limitations have been overcome in 723
Which can be adjusted to both positive and
negative

3 Pin Regulator
IC 723 pin diagram
Block diagram

It has two separate sections ,section 1

contains Zenor diode, a constant Other section contains contains
current source, and Reference amplifier error amplifier , series transistors
produces fixed voltage of about 7V at Q1 and Q2 ,it compares voltage at
Vref the ,Constant current source forces Inverting terminal and Vref at non
zener diode to operate at fixed point inverting terminal, this error
signals controls conduction of
Transistor Q1
Low voltage regulator using 723
Vref X R2
V NI = ------------------
R1+R2
Difference between Vref and V NI is amplified by error amplifier ,output of error
amplifier drives the pass transister so as to minimize the NI and INV input of error
amplifier , it will operate as emitter follower.
Vref X R2
Vo = -----------------
R1+R2
Output voltage becomes low the ,voltage at INV terminal also goes down ,This
makes output of error amplifier become more positive ,By which transistor Q1 is
turned ON ,voltage across the Load will be increased, so initial drop is compensated
Vref is 7.15V
7.15 X R2
Vo = -----------------
R1+R2

Vo is Always than 7.15

High voltage regulator
Here non inverting terminal is directly connected tom Vref
through R3, so voltage at NI is Vref , error amplifier will be
operated as non inverting amplifier

R1
Av = 1 + -------
R2

R1
Vo = 7.15(1 + ------)
R2

Vo is always greater than 7V

CURRENT LIMIT PROTECTION
• The circuit have no protection .if the load
demands more current under short circuit
condition, the ic tries to provide it at a constant
output voltage getting hotter all the time . This
may ultimately burn the ic
• Current limiting refers to the ability of regulator
to prevent the load current from increasing
above a present value.
• Output voltage remains constant for load
current below I limit as current approaches
limit,output voltage drops,the current I limit is
set by connecting Rs between CS and CL
CURRENT FOLDBACK
• In current limiting technique, the load current
is maintained at a present value and when
overload condition occur, the output voltage v0
drops to zero. However ,if the load is short
circuited ,maximum current does flow through
the regulator. To protect the regulator, one must
devise the method which will limit the short
circuit current and yet allow higher current to
the load.
• The current feedback method is used for this.If
the current demand exceeds level both output
voltage and Output current decreases.
• The voltage at the base of Q2(CL) will be
V1R4/(R3+R4)
• The current IL further reduces. This process
continuous till Vo =0v.
Maximum current that IC 723 regulator can produce is
140,we can boost it by adding transistor Q1 ,collector of Q1
comes from power supply,Ouput current from Vo drives the
Base of Q1, base current is multiplied by the beta of pass
transistor

I load = beta X Io
