Suraj Dessertation Seminar

This document summarizes a study analyzing the morphometric characteristics of the Sita River basin in India using GIS technology. Key findings include: 1) 22 morphometric parameters were calculated for the 868 sqkm basin, including a stream order of 1-6, stream length of 1632.11 km, and drainage density of 1.88 km2. 2) The basin relief, relief ratio, and ruggedness number were high, indicating more erosion. 3) The bifurcation ratio and stream number show the basin is vulnerable to unpredictable flooding during heavy rainfall. Proper soil conservation is needed for sustainable agriculture.

Morphometric Analysis of Sita

River Basin through GIS

By- SURAJ ASHOK MULIK

MSc 2nd yr Geology
Guided By- Prof D.B. PANASKAR
Introduction
 Morphometry is the measurement and mathematical
analysis of the configuration of the earth’s surface, shape
and dimension of its landforms.
 The morphometric analysis is done successfully through
measurement of linear, aerial, relief, gradient of channel
network and contributing ground slope of the basin.
 Morphometry is very significant in understanding the
landform processes, soil physical properties and
erosional characteristics.
 This modern approach of quantitative analysis of
drainage basin morphology was given inputs by Horton
(1945) the first pioneer in this field.
Objective
 The present study aims at using the
remote sensing and GIS technology to
compute various parameters of
morphometric characteristics and
specially DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of
the study area by using ArcGis 10.3 and
Google Earth Pro software for the
development and management of natural
resources of the region.
Study Area
 Sita River is a tributary of Godavari River, Which
originates from the northwest part of Nanded at
Bhokar. The river flows from the NW-SE direction
and confluences to Godavari River near Bhainsa.
 The study area is bounded by longitude 77°35’and
78°E and latitude 19°17’ and 19°’3’N with an
average elevation of 370 m above mean sea level.
 The climate of the study area is hot and dry and
the average annual rainfall in the area ranges from
900 mm to1100 mm.
 The minimum and maximum temperatures range
from 21.5° to 35.1°C.

 Basin aspects-Gis
 Ruggedness no. (Rn)- 0.39
 Constant channel maintenance(C)- 0.53
Conclusion
 A total of 22 morphometric parameters were
calculated to understand terrain characteristics of
the basin.
 Sita River, stream order (U) varies from the first
to six covering an area of 868 km2. The
geomorphometric analysis shows that lower-
order drainage patterns are sub-dendritic to
dendritic type and higher-order drainage patterns
are sub-parallel to parallel type.
 The bifurcation ratio and stream number shows
vulnerability for unpredicted flood during heavy
rain- fall; therefore, the geological structure does
not influence the basin.
 The high values of basin relief, relief ratio,
and ruggedness number contributes to
more erosion.
 Therefore, for sustainable agriculture,
proper soil conservation practices are
required in the vulnerable sub-basins.
