blood from the
heart to the tissues
- carry deoxygenated
blood from the tissues
toward the heart.
Exceptions: Pulmonary artery & vein / Umbilical artery & vein
Commonly used sites for
Venipuncture
Identify the patient
Wash hands
Verify requisition and physician’s order
Explain the procedure to the patient
Assemble supplies
Prepare dose for administration
Put on disposable gloves
Choose the best injection site
Apply tourniquet
Clean area with an alcohol swab
Stabilize the vein then insert the needle
Verify that the needle is in the vein
Remove the tourniquet and inject the drug
Remove the needle and apply pressure
Dispose of the syringe and needle properly
Record all relevant information
