The Green Home

1) The document describes a green home model created by students to demonstrate ways to save energy, water, and light. 2) The model included recycling bins, large windows, a white exterior, a cool roof, a rainwater storage tank, and solar panels to showcase green characteristics. 3) The students researched green home features, gathered materials, constructed parts of the model, and assembled it over several days, learning about cool roof technology and green building practices.

Introduction

We were given a task to make a green home

model to show how to save light, electricity and water.
For this green home model we will need to use what we
have learnt through out the whole science syllabus and
do some research on it. As you go further you will learn
more about it.

6. Conclusion
Materials

We used the following materials in our model:

1. Mounting board
2. Popsicle sticks
3. Satay sticks
4. Book wrapping plastic
5. Cardboard
6. Colour paper
7. Artificial plants
8. Plastic straws
9. Stones
10. Toy car
11. Paint
12. Aluminium foil
13. And of course hot glue to put them together!
Early process

Before we started this project, we surfed the

internet. After that we discussed the appearance of the
model as well as the materials needed for it. The next
day, we brought all our materials and started to make it
in the class during our free times.
Steps

1. Firstly, we researched and discussed our project.

2. Then, we brought our materials on Friday (02/11/18). The
body of the house was already done so it saved time.
3. We then made the recycling bins, coloured them and
labelled them. We also made the car park.
4. Next, we made the large windows and the main door.
5. Then, we made the roof out of popsicle sticks, roof drains
using plastic straws and rainwater storage tank using
cardboard.
6. Once most of the minor parts were completed we
glued everything together using the hot glue gun.
7. We then painted the walls and roof white and made
the solar panels.
8. Next, the base of the model was covered in green
paper.
9. Later, we stuck the solar panels and artificial plants.
10. Finally, we gave it the last touches and it was
completed!
‘Green’ characteristics

The following are the green characteristics that makes it a green

home:
 Use recycling bins. Each year tonnes of waste are being
thrown into dumpsites and is one of the main factors of the
global warming phenomenon. That is why we have recycling
bins, in our model we have 4 different kinds bins like the
kitchen scrap bin where you can throw all your kitchen scraps
so it can be decomposed in you garden rather than producing
methane gas in the dumpsite. We have the 3 other kinds bins
which are plastic, paper and tin where they can be disposed
separately to be recycled.
 Have very large windows and tiny windows. It is
important that your house is lighted up properly but
during the day you can save electricity. Instead of
turning the lights on, have large windows in every
room so that light can enter and do open them during
windy days. You must also have small windows on the
edge below the ceiling to let light enter and light up
your ceiling as well. This helps to save a lot of
electricity and is fashionable.
 Keep your house white. Malaysia lies on the equatorial line
and so the weather here is hot. In order to keep your
house cool your house must be painted in bright colours
especially white because it helps reflect back most of the
light.
 Have a cool roof. Another technology of keeping your
home cool is to have a cool roof. It reflects most of the
ultraviolet waves and reduces the temperature inside the
house. A cool roof is white in colour and that is why our
model has a white roof.
 Save rainwater. The best way to save water outside your
house is to store rainwater. The rainwater are being
collected in the rainwater storage tank where you can use
is to water your plants and even clean the drain with it
whenever you wish.
 Have solar panels. Solar panels help transfer light energy
into electricity and can be used in your home. It is installed
on the roof of your house and it is useful during blackouts.
Your electric bills will also be reduced once you have solar
panels!
 Plant more plants. Having plants around your home is
important in order to give balance in nature, contribute to
help reduce the green house gases, provide fresh oxygen
and reduce air pollution. Plants also hold more other
benefits besides the following.
 Use electric powered/hybrid cars. An electric powered or
hybrid car saves plenty of petrol because it runs with
electricity or hydrogen. This technology also enables less
green house gases to be released which will help cool
down the earth. People should start using electric
powered cars and hybrid cars.
Conclusion
This task was rather
interesting to work on as we had to put
all our skills together. We had learnt to
work and contribute together to make
an amazing ‘Green’ home model.
Throughout this task we also learned
many things such as the cool roof
technology. Although we had some
trouble in gathering the materials but
we still got to pull it off!
