Occupational Health Risk Management Guide

The document outlines an occupational health risk management standard. It discusses the need to establish a common approach to managing workplace health hazards through risk assessments, effective health surveillance programs, and ensuring worker awareness and protection. It details expectations such as reviewing the standard, performing a gap analysis, completing site-specific risk assessments, and implementing corrective actions using a hierarchy of controls. Finally, it identifies common health hazards like substances, physical agents, biological agents, and ergonomic risks and provides an example of risks identified at different facility locations.

I. Why have a standard?

 To establish a common and systematic approach for the

effective management of workplace health hazards.

 To perform risk assessments of occupational health hazards

within all of our work sites.

 To manage and control potential health exposures and risks.

 To implement effective health surveillance programmes

 To ensure all workers are aware of and protected from

exposures to occupational health hazards and .

 To prevent workplace injury and illness.

3
II. Expectation 1 – Review the
Standard

a. All sites shall review and

implement the Standard

b. Perform a gap analysis

c. Complete site-specific risk

assessments

d. Implement corrective action

plan using the hierarchy of
controls

4
II. Expectation 2 – Perform a gap analysis

a. All sites to review and • Team ► assemble a review team

implement the Standard of managers and employees to
complete the gap analysis.
b. Perform a gap analysis • Analysis ► compare existing site
procedures with each Section of
c. Complete site-specific risk the Standard.
assessments • Gaps ► identify weak points and
develop an improvement plan.
d. Implement corrective • Actions ► prioritize findings,
action plan using the identify responsible persons, and

II. Expectation 3 – Risk Assessment

a. All sites to review and

implement the Standard • Team ► assemble risk
assessment team & team leader
b. Perform a gap analysis consisting of managers and
employees.
c. Complete site-specific • Train ► provide basic risk
risk assessment assessment training to each
participant.
d. Implement corrective • Evaluate ► perform site risk
action plan using the assessment.
hierarchy of controls • Record ► document findings on
the risk assessment form.
• Action ► develop a corrective
action plan.

III. Health Hazards

Four classes of health hazards:

Substances Physical Agents Biological Agents Ergonomics

Welding fume Noise Poisonous plants Manual handling

Dust Vibration Insects Workstation
Solvents Extreme Animal waste design
Raw Materials temperatures Viruses Biomechanics
Fuels Radiation Mold Repetitive
Exhaust gas Electrical energy Bacteria movements
Cement Dust Anthropometry
Lighting

IV. Requirements

Risk Rating
Risk is the chance (high, moderate, low) that someone could be
harmed by a hazard.
The Standard requires that corrective action plans are prioritised
according to the risk rating as determined by the risk
assessment process.
