 The plot structure, also called the dramatic
structure, of a story, novel or script includes
the events that make up the idea of the
writing. These are often laid out as a series of
beginning, middle and end details and
include five basic elements.
1. Exposition – where the basic characters and plot
elements such as setting are revealed

2. Rising Action – where the problem or conflict


central to the plot is truly introduced

3. Climax – is the turning point of a story

4. Falling Action – includes events that will help to


fully resolve the conflict

5. Resolution – where outcomes are revealed and a


happy or sad ending takes place
 Read the story of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.
Guided by the plot diagram shown below, identify
the 5 elements of a plot in the story. Do this in 20
minutes.
 Form a group with 5 members.
 Read the story entitled, The Lady or the Tiger.
 Identify the elements of plot in the story
using the plot diagram. Write your answers
on a long bondpaper.
 Choose a representative to present the
output to class.
 Do this in 10 minutes.
