Understanding Preferences

Preferences express what one likes more than alternatives. They can take the form of statements using "prefer" followed by a noun or infinitive and "than", statements using "like" followed by a noun or gerund and "better than", or statements using "rather" followed by an infinitive or infinitive plus noun and "than". Examples are given such as "I prefer swimming to diving" and "I like speaking better than writing".
