Positive Isolaton: Prepared By: Bikash Keshari Khilar

It involves identifying hazardous energy sources like electricity, mechanics, or hydraulics; communicating an isolation plan to workers; locking out and tagging out energy sources; releasing any stored energy; verifying isolation; and only then removing lockouts and allowing work. Positive isolation ensures worker safety by disconnecting and separating workers from accidental energy releases.

POSITIVE ISOLATON

Prepared by: Bikash Keshari Khilar

CONTENT

1. What is Positive isolation ?

2. Why it is necessary ?
3. How it is carried out ?
WHAT IS POSITIVE ISOLATION ?
 It is a hazard avoidance technique used to prevent
energy for being accidentally released during the
servicing or installation of equipment.
 It is also called as ESI (Energy Source Isolation).
 It is disconnecting and separating.
WHY IT IS NECESSARY ?
1. To ensure the safety of the employees who work with
mechanical and electrical equipment.
2. To avoid accident.
HOW IT IS CARRIED OUT ?

1. Identification of the hazardous energy

2. Communication with all the workers
3. Isolation of the hazardous energy
3. Release the store energy
4. Verification of Isolation of energy
5. Release of LOTO
IDENTIFICATION OF HAZARDOUS ENERGY
Hazardous energy :
1.Electrical (Live electrical equipment )
2.Mechanical
3.Hydraulic (Hydraulic fluid pipe line)
4.Pneumatic (Air pressure)
5.Steam
7.Chemical
6.Gravity
EXAMPLES OF HAZARDOUS ENERGY

(Electrical energy)

(Gravity) (Hydraulic Energy)

EXAMPLES OF HAZARDOUS ENERGY

(Hydraulic line) (Both mechanical and

electrical enegry)

(Mechanical energy)
COMMUNICATION WITH ALL WORKERS

1. Communicate with all the workers (about

positive isolation) those who are going to
perform the job
2. What to do before the positive isolation , during
during positive isolation and after the
completion of the job.
ISOLATE THE HAZARDOUS EQUIPMENT

Two main things required to isolate the hardous

equipment
1.Lock out
2.Tag out
LOCK OUT
1. A lock is required and a locking device is required that
locks out any electrical , mechanical or other type of
device.
2. Prevent the machinery to turn on
3. There are different colors of locks are there for
operation head , Line manager and contractor
supervisors ,equipment lock and group isolation lock
(Vary from one industry to other industry)
TAG OUT
1. Any sort of card or paper that is tied to a lock.
2. Usually indicates who placed the tag , date ,
equipment name.
3. Give warn that machinery or equipment has been de-
energized.
RELEASE OF THE STORED ENERGY

 It comes after LOTO.

 Dissipatation of the stored energy means
make the store energy zero.
 It is the inegral part of positive isolation , if it is
not done we can’t say we have done positive
isolation.
 There is procedure for release of energy for
many equipments
VERIFICATION OF ISOLATION ENERGY

 It may be visible or invisible

 If invisible then verify by testing devices
(Generally for electrical line repairing)
 Ensure isolation is done correctly
REMOVAL OF LOTO

 Ensure your job is completed

 Do housekeeping

 Ensure your tools in proper place

 Communicate with workers

 Stay away from the repaired device

 Then only remove the LOTO
