Overview of 3D Printing Technology

Charles Hull developed the first 3D printer in 1984 called the SLA-1. 3D printing works by using a CAD file to guide the creation of a 3D object through successive layers of material. It has applications in industries like industrial design, architecture, defense, and medicine. The advantages are highly complex designs, less waste, and potential medical advances - while disadvantages include limited materials, size constraints, cost, and accuracy issues for some geometries.

PRINTING

Printing is a process for reproducing text and images.

Device used - PRINTER

Types of printers:
• Dot matrix
• Ink jet
• Laser
• Lcd
HISTORY OF 3D PRINTERS

• The technology for printing

physical 3D objects from digital
data was first developed by
CHARLES HULL in 1984.
• He named the technique as Stereo
lithography and obtained a patent
for the technique in 1986.
• He released the first SLA-1
machine in the year 1987.
3D PRINTING
• It is a method of converting a
virtual 3D model into a
physical object.

• The 3D object is created by

laying down successive layers
of material.
STEP 1

• This virtual design is made in a CAD (Computer Aided

Design) file or with the use of a 3D scanner (to copy an
existing object).

• A 3D scanner makes a 3D digital copy of an object.

STEP 2
The CAD file is exported to a 3D printing machine.
STEP 3
SELECTIVE LASER
STEREOLITHOGRAPHY SINTERING
APPLICATIONS
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Designers use 3D printers to quickly create product
models and prototypes
ARCHITECTURE:
 Artists can create models of their choice using 3D
printing.
DEFENSE:
Defense Distributed successfully test fired the world's
first 3D-printed handgun named Liberator.
MEDICAL INDUSTRY:

 Artificial hearing aids and teeth manufactured by 3D

printing can be used by physicians to cure their patients
ADVANTAGES
• create any thing with great complexity.

•3D printing is an energy efficient technology.

•Additive manufacturing use up to 90% of standard materials

and therefore creating less waste.

•Lighter and stronger products can be printed.

•Wider adoption of 3D printing would likely cause re-

invention of a number of already invented products.

•Printing 3D organs can revolution arise the medical industry.

DISADVANTAGES
• Since the technology is new , limited materials are available for

printing .

• Consumes more time for less complicated parts.

• Size of printable object is limited by the movement of extruder.

• Curved geometry will not be much accurate while printing.

• 3-D printers are still expensive.
