INTRODUCTION

Of the major three components of

population change migration is most difficult
to conceptualized and measure because
migration is not biologically determined and
not universally in the same sense that births
and deaths are. For geographers, migration
is not merely a relocation of human
resource, but is a process, which has a
three-fold impacts: a) On the area
experiencing in-migration; b) On the area
experiencing out-migration; c) On the
migrants themselves. Generally, migration is
defined as geographic mobility that involves
a change of usual residence.
DEFINITION OF MIGRATION

The views of the following scholars provides us a clear

picture of the concepts of define human migration-

B.N.GHOSH(1985)- Migration is not merely a process of

shifting people from one place to another. It is a fundamental
process of changing the composition of population and
contributes a lot for the understanding of the space-contents
and space-relations of any geographical area.

R.C.CHANDNA(1998) defines migration as a movement

that involves a permanent and semi-permanent change in
residence from one settlement to another. His definition deals
mainly with the residential change and physical distance.
BASIC TERMINOLOGIES RELATED TO
MIGRATION
 The Place of Origin: The place from which the migrants leads is called the place of
origin.

 The Place of Destination: The place where the migrants arrived is referred as the
place of destination.

 Emigration: Leaving one country to move to another(e.g., the Pilgrims emigrated

from England).

 Immigration: Moving into a new country(e.g., the Pilgrims immigrated to America).

 The Gross Migration: The sum of in-migration (immigration) and out-

migration(emigration).

 The Net Migration: It is the difference between immigration and emigration. If

immigration exceeds emigration, the net migration is positive and vice versa.

 Poor Health & Education Service  Better Facilities
 Natural Disasters  Less Chance of Natural Disasters
 Civil Wars
