Aim: Simulation and modeling of integrated renewable energy resources (hydro, solar and wind
energy)
Objectives:
The key purpose of this project is to diversify the energy resource mix to enhance long-term
energy security, and to improve reliability and efficiency in the country’s energy
Following task are to be considered:
•Must complete a detail literature review on renewable energy sources integration.
•Get familiarize on the software (Matlab and Etap).
•To carry out with the collection of necessary required data.
•To carry out the simulation in Matlab.
•To carry out modeling using Etap.
Introduction
Global warming has already influenced the earth due the
emission of burning gas and other fossil fuel in order to generate
energy. This emission will leads to sudden melt of ice and glacier
on the mountain and in turn result to many negative effect such
as shutting down of hydro power plant near future. However, our
awareness of such risk in climate changing and global warming
leads us to find alternative source of energy such as solar and
wind energy to generate electricity. Here the term “integration”
has been used for the relationship between “renewable energy
supplies” which provides higher security and reliable electricity.
Integration of renewable energy sources in Bhutan is feasible as
all those renewable energy sources have a potential of (50 GW
solar, 30 GW hydro and 4GW wind energy generation.)

Literature Review
Barik A.K. and Das D.C.[1] propose that it becomes a great challenge to coordinate between
generation and load demand efficiently with the considered sources of renewable energy due
to their inherent dependency towards climatic variations. To overcome this issue, the
responses of the system are studied for different scenarios of renewable sources availability
and load changes for optimal frequency control. The proposed microgrid is simulated with
MATLAB-Simulink for four different scenarios and the optimized responses are reported to
be competent in maintaining power frequency within the acceptable limit.
Dong X, et.al[2] Proposed that the Newton iteration method is used to solve the equations
that consist of node power injection equations and interconnected power equations. Because
of the consideration of the power balance in each subarea and the order of power exchange,
the presented method is applicable for power flow problems of interconnected power
networks, and is in particular applicable for the system analysis and calculation that based
on the uniform iteration formulation.
Ge W, et.al.[3] state that Multi-source and multi-region combined power generation control
system refers to a system that includes wind, light, storage, hydro energy and other energy
sources existing in multiple regions at the same time and realizing scheduling control at
different levels. For this model, Matlab is used for simulation verification. The results show
that the proposed model provides an effective method to solve the problem of wind power
grid-connected operation.
Suberi K.H[4] have done study that, Bhutan's ambitious vision of 100%
renewable energy supply is based on hydropower as the main source of
electrical energy supply and it is inevitably linked to the adverse impacts of
climate change. In addressing this challenge, this study aimed to identify
alternative renewable energy supplies. Combined potential of these RE sources
have the capacity to mitigate impact of climate change and therefore an
alternative that results in secure and 100% renewable energy supply source is
crucial for Bhutan. According his research(April 2014) on renewable energy
sources in Bhutan he came to conclude that the Bhutan's renewable energy
has a potential of 50 GW solar, 30 GW hydro and 4GW wind energy
generation.
Vuc G, et.al[5] stated that to determine the optimal combination of renewable
energy power plants and to simulate the operation of every combination
starting with the intermittent availability of solar and wind energy, NRELs
software HOMER was used. The HOMER Micropower Optimization Model is a
computer model developed by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL) to assist in the design of micro power systems and to facilitate the
comparison of power generation technologies across a wide range of
applications.
