MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION,

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND


LICENSURE EXAMINATIONS

 BS in Medical
Technology (BSMT) is
a four year degree
program wherein the
students attends
classroom for three
(3) years and does
clinical rotations for
one (1) year.
 student experiences hands-on
learning in each discipline of the
laboratory ; this is an intensive
practical and theoretical training

 performs diagnostic testing in a


functioning laboratory

 Clinical Internship Program - 40


hours per week for 52 weeks (or
one full year)
 The four-year degree program belongs to the
ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSION.

(ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSION – A healthcare profession


that is a part of the healthcare system that provides a
range of diagnostic, technical, therapeutic and direct
patient care and support services).
Teach on how to collect, preserve
and analyze specimens such as
blood, urine, cells and tissues as
well as the preparation of reagents
(compounds or substances added
to a specimen in order to create a
chemical reaction) and stains (a
discoloration made by a foreign
matter) .

Train on how to use modern


equipments, instruments and
scientific methods to provide
accurate laboratory results.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS OR SPECIALIZATIONS:
1. CLINICAL CHEMISTRY

a. Blood Chemistry (Clinical

a. Endocrinology, Toxicology and
Drug Testing (Clinical Chemistry 3)
CLINICAL CHEMISTRY
2. HEMATOLOGY
- The course focuses on theoretical information about the
formed elements of blood, while the practical side –
including red blood cell count, white blood cell and platelet
count are covered – in the laboratory aspect of the course.

3. BACTERIOLOGY
- The study of the historical perspective of microbiology,
bacterial morphology and classification and cell physiology
of medically important bacteria.
HEMATOLOGY
4. PARASITOLOGY
- This course focuses on the study of concepts and principles
associated with morphological structures, classification,
identification, host-parasite interaction, epidemiology and
pathogenecity. Prevention, treatment and control of parasitic
infections are also included.
5. MYCOLOGY AND VIROLOGY
- The course deals with the study of morphologic and
biologic characteristics of fungal and viral agents of diseases.
MICROBIOLOGY
6. IMMUNOLOGY/SEROLOGY
- This deals with the study of antigen
and antibody reactions in vitro

7. IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY (BLOOD
BANKING)
- a specialized field involving the
collection (donation), testing,
processing, and storing blood for later
use (transfusion); important in
emergency and surgical medicine and
is dependent on the clinical laboratory
for ensuring the safe use of blood and
its components

8. ANALYSIS OF URINE AND OTHER
BODY FLUIDS (AUBF) OR CLINICAL
MICROSCOPY
- This course focuses on the clinical
study of the gross, chemical and
microscopic appearance of body
fluids other than blood.

7. HISTOPATHOLOGY
- A specialized area concerned with
the tissue changes characteristic of
disease; tissue processing is also
included here.

Getting a degree is not enough –
once a student graduates HE MUST
PASS THE NATIONAL LICENSURE
EXAMINATION to become a full-
fledged MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST.
• A certification examination created by the Professional
Regulation Commission (PRC) to determine if an individual
has the knowledge necessary to be a competent entry-level
medical technologist.

QUALIFICATION FOR EXAMINATION
• The candidate must possess:
 Good moral character
 Good health
 Has completed a course of at
least four years leading to the
degree of bachelor of science in
medical technology by a
recognized school, college or
university (Section 16, RA 5527)
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION
• The Philippine Board Medical
Technology examination consists of 100
multiple-choice questions for each of
the following six main areas, which
includes:
• Chemistry (20%)
• Hematology (20%)
• Immunohematology (20%)
• Microbiology [Bacteriology, Parasitology, and
Mycology] (20%)
• Histopathology and Medical Technology Laws
(10%)
• Urinalysis and Other Body Fluids (10%)
RATINGS OF THE EXAMINATION

• A candidate must obtain a general average of at least


75% in the written test, with no rating lower than
50% in any of the major subjects, provided that the
candidate has not failed in at least 60% of the
subjects computed according to their relative
weights.
• No further examination
will be given to an
applicant who has not
qualified after three
examinations, unless
and until he shall have
completed a 12-month
refresher course in an
accredited school.
In the Philippines, Medical
Technology graduates who
will pass the Philippine
Board of Medical
Technology are entitled to
use RMT (Registered
Medical Technologist)
after their name.
• The applicant shall take a
professional oath before
the Board or any person
authorized to administer
oaths (Sec. 20, RA 5527)
– Issuance of license
– Issuance of Certificate of
Registration (COR) which
bears the signature of the
Members of the Board and
PRC Commissioner.
• NO CERTIFICATE shall be issued to any
successful examinees:

1. Who has not attained the age of 21 (RA 5527, Sec 21)
2. Any person convicted by a court of competent
jurisdiction of any criminal offense involving moral
turpitude,
3. Any person of guilty of immoral or dishonorable
conduct,
4. Of unsound mind, or
5. Afflicted with incurable communicable diseases (Sec
23, RA 5527)

• The admitted applicant shall be required to display his


COR in the place where he works. (Sec. 21, RA 5527)
LICENSURE ABROAD:
• Medical technologists who are certified by
and remain in good standing with the
American Society for Clinical Pathology
(ASCP) or the American Association of
Bioanalysts (AAB) are entitled to use the
credential "MT, ASCPi" after their names.

• If medical technologists are credentialed


by the National Credentialing Agency for
Laboratory Personnel, the credential "CLS"
(Clinical Laboratory Scientist) may be used.

CAREER OPPURTUNITIES
Cytotechnologist
 They work in a hospital lab, or
commercial lab, analyzing slides of
human cells (which may come from
variety of areas of human anatomy
including skin, digestive tract, etc.) under
a microscope.

 They prepare the slides and examine


them under the microscope, looking for
abnormalities such as cancerous cells,
pre-cancerous cells, or infectious disease
cells (bacteria, viruses, etc.).

Cytotechnologist
• They report their findings to a pathologist
(physician) who then gives the final
diagnosis to report to the treating physician
specialist.

 Their educational track is about one year


long after prerequisite coursework which
is about two years of college.

 Candidates must have a bachelor's degree


in order to qualify for the national
certification exam in cytotechnology.

 Medical professionals who
