Steam & Gas Turbine Design Guide

This document discusses the design of steam and gas turbines. It provides details on mass flow rates and thermodynamic properties of steam at different stages in 500 MW steam turbines used in Indian power plants. It also discusses general rules for steam path design, velocity diagrams, parameters like stage loading and exit Mach number for high and low pressure gas turbines. Design aspects like rotor inlet conditions and plant layout and energy balance diagrams are covered.

General Rules for Steam Path Design

• For HP Axial (flow) velocity at the inlet is 40 m/sec and at

the outlet 65 m/sec. (> 5 Mpa)
• For IP axial velocity of steam at the inlet is 60 m/sec and
at the outlet 80 m/sec (5 Mpa – 0.3 Mpa)
• For LP axial velocity of steam at the inlet is 75 m/sec
and at the outlet of last front stage is 130 m/sec. (<0.3
Mpa)
• Maximum mean blade speed used so far: 450 m/s
• Generally acceptable range of inlet flow angle(a1) : 150
to 200
