DEFINITION OF SYMBIOTIC
• Symbiosis is any type of a close and long-term biological interaction between
two different biological organisms, be it mutualistic, commensalistic ,
or parasitic.
• The organisms, each termed a symbiont, may be of the same or of
different species. In 1879, Heinrich Anton de Bary defined it as "the living
together of unlike organisms".
• Symbiosis can be obligatory, which means that one or both of the symbionts
entirely depend on each other for survival, or facultative when they can
generally live independently.
INFORMATION ABOUT TOURISM IN INDIA
• Tourism means people traveling for fun and for business. It includes activities such as sightseeing and camping.
People who travel for fun are called tourists. Some people travel to do an activity which they cannot do at home.
• Tourism in India is important for the country's economy and is growing rapidly. The World Travel and Tourism
Council calculated that tourism generated ₹16.91 lakh crore or 9.2% of India's GDP in 2018 and
supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment. The sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of
6.9% to ₹32.05 lakh crore by 2028 (9.9% of GDP).
• Over 10 million foreign tourists arrived in India in 2017 compared to 8.89 million in 2016, representing a growth
of 15.6%.Domestic tourist visits to all states and union territories numbered 1,036.35 million in 2012, an increase
of 16.5% from 2011.In 2014,Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh were the most popular states for tourists.
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai,Agra and Jaipur were the five most visited cities of India by foreign tourists during the year
2015. Worldwide, Delhi is ranked 28th by the number of foreign tourist arrivals, while Mumbai is ranked
30th, Chennai 43rd,Agra 45th, Jaipur 52nd and Kolkata 90th.
• The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019
ranked India 34th out of 195 countries overall. India
improved its ranking by 6 places over the 2017 report .The
report ranks the price competitiveness of India's tourism
sector 13th out of 195 countries.
• The country also scores high on natural resources (ranked
14th), and cultural resources and business travel (ranked
8th).However, some other aspects of its tourism
infrastructure remain somewhat underdeveloped.
The World Tourism Organization reported that India's
receipts from tourism during 2012 ranked 16th in the
world, and 7th among Asian and Pacific countries.
ABOUT ANDAMAN
• The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a Union territory of India comprising
572 islands of which 37 are inhabited, are a group of islands at the juncture
of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
• The territory is about 150 km north of Aceh in Indonesia and separated
from Thailand and Myanmar by the Andaman Sea. It comprises two island
groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, separated by the
150 km wide Ten Degree Channel (on the 10°N parallel), with the
Andaman to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobar to the south (by
179 km). The Andaman Sea lies to the east and the Bay of Bengal to the
west.
• The territory's capital is the city of Port Blair. The total land area of these
islands is approximately 8,249 km2. The territory is dived into three
districts: Nicobar District with Car Nicobar as capital, South Andaman
district with Port Blair as capital and North and Middle Andaman
district with Mayabunder as capital.
• The Andaman Islands are home to the Sentinelese people, an uncontacted
people. The Sentinelese are the only people currently known to not have
reached further than a Paleolithic level of technology.
TOURISM IN ANDAMAN
• Despite of the horrid reputation during the colonial period, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands this day are one
of the most sought after tourist destination of India. The islands are famous for its serene, white sandy
beaches characterized by sparkling blue waters.
• Radhanagar beach at Havelock Island was bestowed with the title of ‘Asia’s Best Beach’ in 2004 by the TIME
magazine. It is also listed as world’s 7th most spectacular beach on Time magazine list.
• According to data available with the Union Home Ministry, more than 16 lakh tourists have visited the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands since 2015 till October to see the natural beauty, beaches, flora and fauna and
historically-significant landmarks in around 37 inhabited islands out of the 572 islets.
• The archipelago has received 4,02,393 tourists, including 11,818 foreigners, in 2017 year till October while it
received 4,87,229 tourists, including 15,310 foreigners.
• In 2016, as many as 4,00,019 tourists, including 15,467 foreigners, had visited the Andaman and in 2015, a total
of 3,11,358 tourists, including 14,674 foreigners, had gone to the union territory, the data said.
