Biodiesel Production From Pungamia Seed: BY, S. Praveenkumar Chemical Department Apec (Melmaruvathu R)

This document discusses biodiesel production from Pungamia seed. It provides a brief history of biodiesel, noting that transesterification of vegetable oils was conducted in the 1850s and Rudolf Diesel's first engine ran on peanut oil. The abstract introduces biodiesel production from renewable resources like vegetable oils and animal fats via transesterification. The introduction covers biodiesel playing a vital role as an alternative fuel and that vegetable oils must be converted to biodiesel via transesterification to reduce viscosity for use in diesel engines. The document then provides sections on biodiesel production processing, properties, advantages including being renewable and reducing emissions, and applications.

HISTORY
 Transesterification of a vegetable oil was conducted as early
as 1853 by Patrick Duffy, four decades before the first diesel
engine became functional.
 Rudolf Diesel's prime model, a single 10 ft (3.05 m) iron
cylinder with a flywheel at its base, ran on its own power for
the first time in Augsburg, Germany, on 10 August 1893
running on nothing but peanut oil.
 In remembrance of this event, 10 August has been declared
"International Biodiesel Day".
 during World War II. Belgium, France, Italy, the United
Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Japan and
China were reported to have tested and used vegetable oils
as diesel fuels during this time.
ABSTRACT
1.Biodiesel is produced from renewable resources
like vegetable oils and animal fats. It can use as a
fuel in diesel engine by blending with diesel or in
pure form.
2.Production of biodiesel from edible oil is not
economical for India due to its higher price.
Various non-edible oil seeds like Jatropha,
Pungamiapinatra, etc.
3.Its seeds contain 27–39% of the oil.
Transesterification, Pyrolysis, Microemulsion and
Blending are four primary methods for the
production of biodiesel.
INTRODUCTION
 Biodiesel plays a vital role as an alternative fuel due to
the depletion of fossil fuel resources.
 The pure vegetable oils can not be used as fuels for
diesel engines due to its high viscosity.
 To overcome this problem the vegetable oils are
converted into biodiesel by performing
transesterification reaction.
 Technically, biodiesel is the fatty acid alkyl ester made
by the transesterification of plants seed oil or animals
fat, with short chain alcohols such as methanol or
ethanol.
 The unique properties of biodiesel are biodegradability,
low toxicity, low sulphur content, high flammability and
high cetane number.
PRODUCTION
EXTRACTION OF BIODISEL
ADVANTAGE
Produced from Renewable Resources
Can be Used in existing Diesel Engines
Less Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Grown, Produced and Distributed Locally
Cleaner Biofuel Refineries
Biodegradable and Non-Toxic
Better Fuel Economy
Positive Economic Impact
Reduced Foreign Oil Dependance
More Health Benefits
DISADVANTAGE
Slight Increase in Nitrogen Oxide Emissions
Fuel Distribution: Biodiesel is not distributed
as widely as petroleum diesel.
Monoculture
Water Shortage
Regional Suitability
 Clogging in Engine: Biodiesel cleans dirt from
the engine. This proves to be an advantage of
biofuels but the problem is that this dirt gets
collected in fuel filter and clogs it.
