Process Engineering: The Introduction

Process engineering involves modeling multi-step industrial processes through process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams. A process has a starting point, end point, purpose, input quality standards, and is usually linked to other processes. Chemical processes involve chemical reactions under certain conditions to transform raw inputs into valuable outputs, such as crude oil refining and gas processing.

Process Engineering

The Introduction
Process Engineering

Process Engineering involves building a model of a process (usually

multi-step, parallel or series operations) (Industrial/Management
Engineering)
A Process
• A process has the following characteristics:
• a starting point and an end point. This is the scope
• a purpose or aim for the outcome
• rules governing the standard or quality of inputs throughout the process
• it is usually linked to other processes
• it can be simple and short, or complex and long
A Chemical Process

• Involves different chemicals.

• A chemical Reaction occurs.
• Requires certain conditions.
• An important output is received from raw input.
Examples of Chemical Process

• Crude Oil Refinery

• Sour Gas Processing

etc
Crude Oil Refinery
Gas Processing
Process Flow Diagram (PFD)

A diagram to indicate the general flow of plant processes and

equipment.
PFD (Contd.)

• A PFD shows
• General Flow
• Equipment involved in process
• Process parameter (Flow, Pressure, Temperature etc.) details
• A simple control philosophy.
• Equipment name
Example PFD
Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)

A diagram which shows the interconnection of process equipment and

the instrumentation used to control the process.
