Antipyretic drugs are used to reduce fever by lowering the body's temperature set point. Fever is the body's natural defense mechanism against infection, raising the temperature to fight off pathogens. Antipyretic drugs work by lowering the temperature standard back to normal. They are indicated for any disease that causes a fever over 38.5°C. Each antipyretic drug has contraindications - for example, paracetamol should not be given to those allergic to it, while aspirin should not be used by those with liver problems or a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
