Moxibustion For Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy

Moxibustion is a heat stimulation technique applied to acupuncture points that has been suggested to help reduce nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. This study compared the effects of moxibustion at the P6 and ST36 acupuncture points on nausea and vomiting symptoms in 30 pregnant women. Moxibustion was applied for 5 days at one of the points. Results showed that moxibustion at the P6 point significantly reduced nausea scores and increased beta-endorphin levels, while ST36 point moxibustion did not significantly affect these measures. The study concludes that moxibustion at the P6 point is more effective than the ST36 point in reducing nausea and vomiting during early pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION

Nausea and vomiting were a common symptom that

occurs in 70-80% of pregnant women. The alternative
treatments such as herbal medicine, acupressure and
moxibustion have been suggested. Moxibustion was
a heat stimulation technique at acupuncture points.

The purpose of this study was to explain the effect

of moxibustion at P6 and ST36 point on nausea
vomiting in pregnancy.

FINDINGS

Moxibustion stimulated B-endorphins release that

block neurokinin1,aceticolin, dopamine, and histamine
receptor impulses that bind to substances in the
vomiting center and CTZ. Blocked receptor surplus
results in decreased stimulation at the CTZ and
vomiting center, so that symptoms of nausea and
vomiting decrease.

Moxibustion on P6 point was believed to improve

vital energy which was the basic material of
human life in the stomach and digestive tract, so
that the stomach and digestive tract can work
normally.
The results of this study were
supported by Adlan, the study
which showed that P6 point
significantly decreased the
degree of nausea and vomiting
and shortened the period of care
for patients in the hospital. This
finding is also supported by Ellila
,showed significant differences
frequency of nausea-vomiting
before and after stimulation in
P6.5,8 The study by Dupuis was
not in line with the results that
shows that P6 stimulation was
safe but didn’t provide significant
changes in the reducing
symptoms of nausea-vomiting
CONCLUSION

Moxibustion at the ST36 point was less effective in reducing

symptoms of nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy. Moxibustion
at P6 point was more effective than at ST36 point in reducing
symptoms of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

RECOMMENDATION

The results of this study can be used to complement holistic care,

especially in pregnancy care services in overcoming discomfort in
pregnant women in the form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
